Do any of you who use the "game" fence ever have trouble with fawns getting through?

we have put up black poly for most of it but we still see them squeezing through the square wire.

What do you think of using chicken wire around the inside if it is tightly attached?

Thanks!

Knock on wood we have never had any go through the game fence. We have shade cloth on the fence. My problem is them getting through the tiny space between the gate and post.

Yes...Mostly on common fence where there are deer on both sides.

I had bought plastic snow fence last year and put that up...But that was a waste...The deer chew it and bucks rip it up. I thought about wood snow fence roll it out for fawns and back in after.

we ran chicken wiren on the outside of the fence, of course we only did 3 sides and one of the little buggers found the side that was not done. I will be doing the fourth side to tomorrow

I had a buck fawn get thur the game fence last year in to the big pen.My fawn pen is attack to my big pen. This year I took some fence that had hole's in it about 1and1/2" by 3" an ran that about 3' up on all 4 side's.Then I took some shad cloth an covered the new fence with it.Some of the fawn's I stuck in there were very skitish and they would run down the fence trying to get out. They would run into the corner's,kept pokeing there head's into the shade cloth. That is why I did not use the chicken wire,I was afriad they would get there nose caught in the skinny wire or there lip's an rip the skin loose. They would rub against the fence pretty hard.Just one hillbilly's oppinon.

We have put chain link fence 4 ft. high around the bottom 1/2 of our fawn pens. This works great. Over the years with freezing and warming, posts shift around gates and we have attached a sort of rubber flap that the gate can push past but it will keep the fawns in.

When i had my fawn pen, I used that plastic snow fence and zip tied it to my woven wire. It helped as a blind, too.

I had a 3 week old fawn hanging 3-3.5 feet in my fence face down. I brought him in and gave him pediatyte, .1cc of dexamethozon, .1 cc of banamine, and .5 cc of penicillin. His swelling went down but tendons in the back legs were weak so I put splints on them and it working great I was able to take one off and the other splint will come off today. But I am having to bottle raise him.

Yes, fawns can definitely get thru solid lock fence with 6" stays. After many trials and errors, from experience I can say that using chicken wire or plastic or that thin rubber coated garden wire is a poor fix and very temporary. We now have 12 gauge chainlink fence 4' high around all of our fawning pens. Even that fence gets damaged if you have bucks in the pen during the rut, but it will hold up pretty well.

Maybe we've just been lucky but the 85%x44" shade cloth on the fawn pen has worked for us. Boy I hope I didn't just jinx it! Rick

I have seen fawns who were a month old who knew they could get through 6" and some how had a computer-sonar device in their heads where they could run full-speed at a partition fence and leap through it, only leaving the fence bouncing a little, but they got through. I put 3" up on all my pens that are having fawns these days. Back to the plastic, I just committed to 750" of solid-black by DelClayna. Are you guys saying that it was a waste? I'm going to put it on the peremiter fence where I have my fawns, but no doubt I will have bucks in those pens when the fall comes. I'll put it on the outside but I don't want to lose my investement. Maybe I'll wait until I've sawed the bucks befoe they go to those "black" pens...I sent the check out two days ago, so I need some advice before I put it up. Please, SOS!

Yup one went through my fence a week ago, now I walk the peremiter of fence every day , just in case.

Bobbi Jo be careful with the plastic fence. I used the constuction orange fence one year thinking I was protecting my fawns from the Solidlock. Thought if they hit that it may ease their hit. Wrong !!! Since the high fence was on the inside of the post it left that 5 inch gap. Well the fawns got spooked and hit the orange fence and one girl went through it and was stuck. If I wasn`t here she would have died right there. Her poor face got all cut up from the plastic. That`s why Steve says those kind fences are tempory.

I just had a fawn out for about 4 days, could not find her. I would not beleive it if I did not see it.......But, I went down to feed and saw the mother leaning against the fence, and guess what....the little bugger had her head through the square and was nursing from outside the pen. Unbeleivable ! We had to surround it and caused her to jump into the fence and get stuck so that I could grab her and take her back in. Now that pen has 4 foot 12 gauge chain link around the bottom. To them the wire is just another jagger bush, they just squeeze their way through it.

Thanks all. Made sure the fawn was back in (I stood outside while we searched in case he was in and tried the escape route...which he was and he did but I was there waiting;0) Put up the smaller wire but will probably not put bucks in this pen since we have seen first hand what a buck will do when it gets a load of wire around his antlers and they find it and tear it up for sure!

If you put the plastic fence on the outside of your big fence, the fawn's might get stuck in between the two fence's.I geuss that is wear I am lucky,I have a different pen just for my fawn's because I bottle feed all of them.

Mitch

You say you have a 5" gap in between your 2 fence's.I ziptie my 2 fence's together.Of course I might not be understanding what you are saying.I am not the smartest hillbilly in the world.

Ky that`s what I meant. It was at a corner post that is 12" and I couldn`t get it tight to the high fence. I didn`t think for a second when I put that stuff up that a fawn could go through it. ALMOST, learned another lesson the hard way. Your right though. If it was tight to the high fence all over it would be fine. Other than bucks having fun with it.

So for those gov people in the states who would like to raise the fence requirement to 10 foot, what you really are saying is the 8 foot fence just was a temporary fence that was not put up correctly and when the deer jumped 6 feet the fence gave way on top and the deer rolled over it. Right?
