What kind of feed or grain do you recommend giving 3-4 wk old fawn.

She is still on unimilk and she needs to go to some kind of solid food.

I just don't know whether to buy deer food or calf feed. Help please.

Has she had any solids to eat at all yet?? She should have some dirt in her system by now and im sure she will start picking at grasses and clover if givin the chance. We start ours out on calf-manna.Its a little pricey but after they get through a bag of that they are ready to move into your normal feeding program!

Yes, she does eat some dirt. And she is eating grass, a little.

But I didn't know what kind of solid grain, feed, etc. to start her on. I didn't know whether to try calf or some kind of horse feed.

All the sites that I went too just said grain, pellets. But not what kind.

I will go to some place like Tractor Supply or a feed store and get some of the calf mana.

Maybe a cup/day?

I let mine eat grass and leaves. I also put a bowl of crack corn in their pen with fresh dirt. When they start picking at the crack corn add some deer pellets from the local feed store. As long as she is taking the milk do not worry about the solids, just make them available, she will start eating them when she is ready.

We start offering calf manna at 3 weeks of age. Just leave a dog bowl full in pen. Usually they eill be eating it pretty good by 4 to 5 weeks old. Then over the next 3 weeks we slowly add a little of our big deer ration mixed with it. By 8 weeks we have it mostly our big deer ration. We would watch the corn intake when they are 3 weeks old as we learned the first year we raised deer. We just dumped a bowl full of our big deer ration with oats corn and roasted beans and sufferred a bout with scour and bloat. We now start with the calf manna and their stools are soon hard pellets. I started with calf manna on my mother raised fawns by putting it on a bowl under a low sheltr where only fqwns could get in. The first two weeks worked great but now the does are dragging themselves all the wat down on the loor to get o the bowl.

Any ideas on how to keep the does out. I doubt that i can lower the shelter any more.

Thanks

Calf Manna, Our normal deer feed and a little extruded soybean meal is available for ours at all times and our fawns take right to it. They will eat thier bottles and go traight to the feeder and start muching to get the taste of that Red Cap out of thier mouths ..............I guess! lol

We start ours out on a mixture of different pellets. We mix calf-manna, deer chow, rabbit pellets and rice bran pellets. They seem to like the variety and it gets them ready for the adult feed and the transition is smoother.

Hey Scott, thanks for the idea. CHERRIOS would be a great snack item. We usually use Nilla wafers.

Cherrios and Alfalfa to get them started

I took in a fawn from someone who had fed it coco puffs and orange soda for over a week before I got it...never was right and died couple of weeks later.

Cherrios sounds like it would work.....

Scott, the fawn I called you about died, never could turn her around. I do appreciate the help you gave me.

my fawn hated alfalfa pellets, she wouldn't go near them for months. she took off on COB (corn oat barley) with sweet feed mixed in. cheerios are a given. so are animal crackers or nilla waffers... she also loved toasted multigrain bread w/peanut butter as a treat.
