Fencing and trees?

I am putting up another pen and this one is in a area with alot of trees. Is there any problem with attaching the new fence to an occasional tree right in the fence line.? I realize that if the tree blows over you have a problem but that could happen too even if it were'nt attached. Would it violate any game fence "codes"? Your experience?

Regadrless of the codes........attaching the fence to a tree is never a good idea.

1. If a deer hits the fence near the tree, it is usually bad because the fence doesn't give because the tree is so rigid.

2. As the tree grows, the fence lifts from the ground. It doesn't take long to get a gap under the fence.

3. Branches from the tree will occasionally fall onto the fence from above and damage the fence.

I realize sometimes you just can't move all of the trees, so you just have to let your concience be your guide.

Scott is correct, never attached a fence to a living tree, you will just be fixing the issue next year and hopefully no deer will excape.

A tree does not grow from the bottom up it grows from the top up. It will just get fatter it will not lift your fence from the ground. Trust me I know what I am talking about. I have used trees for post but I went up 12 feet or so and cut the top out so they are more stable and the wind does not move them. Make sure you cut the tops out in the fall or winter months so they will resprout in the spring and not die. The tree will eventually grow around fence thow.

X2 That is one of the first things they teach you in surveying classes, that a spike in a tree makes a great benchmark because as long as the tree is alive the elevation will not change.

You might want to check on the code in your state. In WI we cannot attach fence to trees for deer farming purposes. Before we are issued a license our fence is inspected and has to meet certain requirements - so you might check with your state on that.
