1st - I've gained so much advice on this forum, it's greatly appreciated. I have my first deer arriving tomorrow. Plan is to have pellets, water for two days in pen and just leave them alone for a couple of days. Pens are 50 mts from house with electric fence too boot so hopefully pumas won't get them. My question concerns my labrador. Do I need to keep her penned up in the beginning? We've had goats out there for years and she pretty much ignores them so I hope she treats the deer the same way. Any special instructions for introducing her to the deer?

I visited pens where they are located yesterday and three of the does seem extremely tame. One will eat right out of your hand. However, the other two were a bit skiddish.

just my two cents , but i would definatly keep her away for a bit she may be ok with the deer , but the deer may not be ok with her . sure dont want to get them spooked in a new enviroment . i would make sure your around when you introdue them just to make sure all is well . Good luck with your deer..

I would definatly NOT leave the dog alone with them, if they would spook and they probably will at first it may trigger the dog to chase them even if she never does it with anything else, it's just animal instict. I would take every precaution possible at first until they get used to you and the new surroundings. How big is the enclosure they are going to be in? Is it big enough where they will safe running to the other side if a predator is walking around the outside? I have 5 labs and the deer pen is only about 60 ft from the dog pen so they are used to them now but they still watch them. I also have a big cat and they NEVER take there eyes off of that cat! They will lick the labs and have no fear if you have any bottlefed ones that you let the dogs around early.

Pen is 200' x 200' and I left motts of brush (blackbrush, guajillo, persimmon, mesquite) in the pen so they can shade and hide. Thanks for the advice.

Astark,

My concern for you is that the pens are so far from your home........the problem with these types of setups is if the deer are not exposed to people daily they will get very wild very quick........if this is something your not concerned about then your good to go. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in......good luck and welcome to deer farming!

Are you saying that the pen is 50 minutes from your house? If so will there be someone there watching over your deer?

A 200 by 200 ft pen is big enough but if dogs can run around the whole pen chasing your deer they wont last long.

I agree with the above posts about your lab. But I would be worried about other dogs. The electric will keep them from digging under or climbing the fence, but it wont keep them from chasing the deer from outside the pen.

I thought he may have meant "meters"...maybe I was wrong. The deer at our farm are used to our dogs, but that takes time and calm dogs and deer. Once the deer get adjusted to the pen and you, you should be able to gradually introduce the dog as long as the dog stays with you and doesn't chase. If you go about your normal routine with the dog by your side, they will think of the dog as an extension of you. If there is any chance of the dog chasing, keep the dog away.

50 mts is 50 meters, sorry 'bout that. Yep down here in ole Mexico we are on the metric system. Wish I had payed attention in school to all that celcius metric system junk. All went perfect and the deer are eating and drinking. They seemed a little concerned about goats roaming around but by the end of the afternoon they were on opposite sides of the fence checking eachother out. We have a bunch of kid goats around here right now. I have kept Rita away from pens for now as per your advice. I guess I'll just slowly let them see her at a distance and slowly over time let her get a little closer. She's an inside dog anyway. Thanks for the advice and good wishes.

Oooohhhh fifty meters....big difference from fifty minutes.....lol......have a great time and enjoy your new deer......hope all goes well!
