Fogging for EHD

Time to start thinking about EHD prevention. Last year many deer farmers turned to a ULV fogger to protect their deer against EHD. While nothing is 100% fool proof, we received excellent results from fogging. You can also control your flies & insect to relieve stress from pregnant does and protect your bucks during antler growth. This is a small investment at $2,495 to save and protect your herd.....Thousands of deer were killed last year by EHD. Early prevention, starting in the spring with the proper chemicals and a fogging maintenance program can help you maintain a healthy deer herd. This fogger is also safe to use around fawns, pets, gardens and stable areas.......Feel free to call or email with any questions!!!

Does anyone know how far a midge travels?  Just curious about how to "get ahead" of these things.  We went from fogging with 1 Quart Permex 31-66 with 1.75 Gal Mineral oil to fogging the past week with Tengard diluted with 91%PBO8, Nygard and about a quart of diesel to top off fogger.. And Alternating with the Mineral Oil mix again every couple days.  When we started loosing deer we  fogged from 6pm to 10pm then again after a few hours sleep then for hour before daylight till about an hour after day light.  I fogged in my pens and worked my way to basically a 20' wide woodline that runs through my neighbors pasture.  At it's closest point it's 150 yards from my pens.  So went through a few hundred dollars in a week and killing everything except the 1-2 millimeter gnats I presume are midges I've pretty much deemed this a futile effort.  If 1/3 Permethrin and 2/3 PBO doesn't kill them pretty sure nothing will so I am assuming they are traveling that far.  So far all but one deer in my South pen has either died or gotten sick.   This is the only pen in which I don't have rope wicks set up for the deer to pass under.  Since most are  sick to some degree we are just giving the pens a once over and moving to the pen furthest upwind and fogging it.  Any thoughts?

TRUTH,

I'm very sorry to hear about the problems you're having. I'll be having good thoughts that things go as well as possible for you.

In calmer times, when you're past the stress of this, could you possibly post a photo of how you have your rope wicks strung up? I know people use that sort of thing for cattle and other livestock, but I'm wondering how it is managed with deer in terms of rigging it so that antlers don't get caught up in it.

Best of luck to you.

Truth,. And to all that will Listen! I have been fighting EHD since my first year almost 15 years ago here in Okla. and have tried it ALL ! but it's only been in last 4 years that I feel comfortable around EHD season . My preparation starts in April well before those freakin killing Bastards arrive! It was truly be accident I Planted wild sunflowers for a little cover in pens and turned on my misting system early . LOST one deer between 3 farms have not had a confirmed EHD death since for those who think I am Crazy truly don't care ! Just investigate will wild sunflower repel biting insects Once my sunflowers get established I mow them regularly leave around perimeter and have sunflower islands through my pens Good lucks guys mark kwitowski

That is very interesting. I am sure Cody from South Dakota will be interested. I believe his ranch may have a lot of sunflowers around it. I would like to know if your hard horns are much darker than other farms around you? I think fogging for the most part is a waste. If you read the forums when EHD hits, the guys who are fogging are loosing deer just like those who aren't.

Johathan as far as antler color don't believe mine r any different then my deer farmer neighbors ! But I truly do believe my planting of these sunflowers is a natural way to fight the midge fly along with my in line chemical system ! And start early for example my Shawnee farm est. 5 years ago first year lost 34 out of 53 in 7 weeks 0 losses after sunflowers as we speak Hinton Mule Deer farm 48 animals 1 loss 2 years ago was confirmed EHD , Droptine farm Choctaw 50 plus 0 losses as of today's date new Pride farm 28 animals no losses I have shared the use of sunflowers with my neighbors in past they have all complained they won't be able to watch antler growth that's why they r mowed I don't use them for cover anymore I am after the Odor and Oily secretion they produce and if they truly Help I want my animals walking thru them bedding in them then eating them like they r doing at this time Another change I made was each of my water troughs r directly under a chemical misting head I want my chemical to blanket the water service Fogging is a joke ! Tried serum that's bullshit EHD resistant genetics that's crap ! Only thing that has worked for me is START EARLY!

I was interested to know if you thought the oil secreted by the stalks might stick on their horns and allow more grime to darken their antlers. I planted sunflower and under planted them with iron and clay peas but I didn't see the staining I desired. I will be planting them again next year because of the theory you have shared. Nothing matches the person in the field or the real world experience.

Thanks

Jonathan I never thought of oil used to discolor or darken does make sense can tell u this they r beating the hell out of them since they have she'd velvet My pens r cover at first with sunflowers but as I mow I remove 80 percent by sept Only my perimeter fence will have them. Shortly I have planted everything there is in last 15 yrs this year planted red river crab grass and flax seed freakin deer love it flax plant stem r very high in lignin when mature but my deer keep them mow down Have good day.

I can't believe you got a stand of sunflowers to grow lol!  I planted 5 acres for the wild deer last year and they couldn't even make for the deer eating them!  I appreciate the advice and I'll give it a try next year.

I was always told right or wrong that the color mostly depends on what they rub, after all once hard the antlers are calcified and that's naturally white so light antlers makes sense to me.  However, I love dark antlers myself.  I was always told that the darker antlers are generally on bucks that run a lot of oily sappy trees like pines and the lighter colored was due to rubbing hardwoods.. I would venture to guess that its mostly due to stains from something else mixing with the oils and sap after rubbing... But, the easiest way is to darken them up after they are dropped.  I forget what our taxidermist uses but ask around I'm sure you can get a couple different ideas talking to them.
