I am a trade analyst at the U.S. International Trade Commission. The United States allows developing countries to export many products to the United States duty-free, provided U.S. imports in a product category do not exceed set limits.
For 2016, imports from Indonesia of “edible products of animal origin, not elsewhere specified” classified under HTS 0410.00.00 are getting close to the limit. (We don’t have all the data in for December, so won’t know for sure for about another month.) Since they may exceed the limit, my agency has to figure out the impacts that these imports are having on U.S. producers and consumers. Part of that is finding out just what is entering from Indonesia and if the same products are produced in the United States.
One of the products that can fall in this classification is powdered antler for human consumption (e.g. in capsules).
Is anybody producing this in the USA? Can you estimate the number of producers or the value of production?
