Fire Away.

Another place to ask questions with quick response is "Deer Farmers Q&a" on facebook. Its a group of only deer fafarmers and you usually have a dozen answers in a little bit. This site and that are great wealths of knowledge to use

Does anyone have any suggestions on deer feeders.  And is it perfered to feed by hand or self feeders ?  I know some feed recommends  one way or the other,  thinking about the purina antler advantage 16/5 textured it can be fed either way. Thx Mark

Not familiar with that purina feed. But if you say it can be fed via gravity self feeders then alright. Self feeders will keep your feed dry unlike a trough feeder unless it is a covered variety. Trough feeding each day forces you to go out and see the animals regularly which is best for taking good care of them. You will notice issues sooner. Self feeders tend to have fewer issues with birds, but do not end bird problems. Self feeders are good for those times when you want to go away for a couple days also. It is easier to ask and trust someone to just stop by and make sure the water units are working instead of asking them to carry feed also.

I used a self feeder for the first few weeks and I didn't like it because I couldn't keep track of how much they were eating. I now have a trough feeder and built just a little lean to shelter over it and I like it a lot better because now I can keep track of how much they are eating everyday. Plus it gives me another excuse to go out and see them. Also I am using Record Racks breeder feed. After talking to Klick whitetails and few others I decided to go with Record Rack Breeder 18% because of not only the price of the purina but also after comparing ingredients and nutrients there isn't any difference really. If ya got anymore questions don't be afraid to get ahold of me,

I use a couple different styles of self feeders. Some are homemade.

You can still feed them every day and still keep track of how much they are eating

A guy doesn't have to fill em up full?

I feed my does and fawns from gravity style cattle feeders. I feed my bucks in 20' long 12" PVC pipe cut in half length ways. I mounted the half pipe about 18" off the ground. The pipes surface works great when top dresses are added none get wasted.

Thanks for the ideas, think I will try a trough feeder covered by a portable garage in my first pen and see what happens.  Mark
