Jim the best advice I can give you is do not spend money in deer thinking you will get a return. It simply will not happen any longer.
That said, if you insist on having some deer shoot me an email. I can sell you some cheap priced but great producing does.
As for as vets go. No vet knows everything about deer. The hardest part is finding a vet who actually wants to work with deer. Plover WI has a great vet office. Doc Johnson and his staff are excellent.
The worst part about treating deer is that a lot of treatment has to be done in a way that is hands off. Because you can't work directly with them like a cow or dog. Also they disguise their illness very well. It is part of their natural instinct for survival.
As far as feed goes. Feed a grain/pellet all year round. Feed hay along with the grain or pellet through the winter months. Do NOT fall victim to the idea the fat level should be so low as many commercial feeds claim. It should stay around 5% to 5.5%
Also protein levels need to be set according to the overall feed intake available. High protein pastures means the grain/pellet in the feeders need not be as high in protein. Shoot for a total intake of about 16%-17% protein.
Everyone has their own ideas and their own success and failure stories. What works for one farm does not always work for another farm. Find what works best for you.
