Help DARTING small fawn

Hi Guys:



I posted a thread a couple of days ago in the Antler's Lounge section asking for help with a fawn that I am having problems with. The fawn was observed foaming from the mouth, whole face and chin is always wet and it does a constant licking with the tongue. It appeared that the symptoms went away but unfortunately this morning I found that the fawn has continued foaming from the mouth. My vet said it could be a number of things including something caught in the fawns mouth and she wants to examine him up close and so we have to dart. This fawn was born late and is very small (i guess 35 lbs max) and so I am a bit concerned. I will be doing the darting. Does anyone have any tips or experience in darting such small deer? Any information would be extremely helpful.

Practice, practice. Small area to hit but would choose rump area. I would use Xylazine so it could be reversed with Tolazine. I would use 3/4cc Xylazine 1/4 sterile fluid in a 1cc dart with a 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch needle. You can file or grind a longer needle down. This is more Xylazine than is needed but I think some will not go into the animal because of the short needle. You should monitor the animal closely and reverse if it looks like it is in trouble.

As far as power setting I would want the lowest setting you could get away with as we don't know how close you can get to that animal. Just my opinion.
 
If the fdawn weighs 35# the dosage rate is .4cc Xylazine Telazol. Mixture rate is 6cc Xylazine to one bottle Telazol. Wait 1 hour before reversing with Tolazine. This should produce a plane of anestesia suitable to perform any inspection/repair work on the mouth without inducing too much stress. Perform darting when cool (evening, early morning) and keep an eye on core temp during downtime to insure overheating does not occur. If core temp gets to 103, then give a cool water enema to bring it down. Don't forget to keep the eyes covered and be as quiet as possible to help reduce stress.
 
I had to dart 30 or so fawns two years ago that were very young. I used 1/2 cc of xylazinne in a half cc dart with a half inch needle and reversed with 1/2cc of tolazine. This worked well for me I had 100% success was a bitt worried darting at such young age but all went well. As Jack stated aim for the rump.
 
Thank you so much for all of your help. I will be darting first thing tomorrow morning. I was supposed to dart Saturday but the vet had two emergencies and by the time she was available it was in the high 70's...just too hot. With too many variable to think about, I made the decision to wait until Monday as I didn't want to add one more bad element (the heat) to what I am trying to do.

Hello Everyone:



Today I darted my fawn with a 1 cc dart filled with 1/2 cc of Xylazine and 1/2 sterile saline. The darting went well, however, the temperature rose quickly and it ended up being a really hot day. I have been monitoring the fawn all day to make sure it wouldn't go down in the sun. The effects of the Xylazine have not yet worn off and I am getting concerned that the heat today may have created additional complications with the fawns ability to revive and get to water for a drink. Does anyone have any advice as to what, if anything, I should do?

Can you tell me what the issue was? One month old fawn stopped eating, foaming from the mouth and licking.
