Help! First time raising a fawn

Hello, I am by no means a deer farmer. However I have acquired a female fawn. Her mother was found dead on the road. It's not an option to call anyone in the fish/game/wildlife profession. I'm scared of what will happen to her. I want to take care of her and let her do her thing when she's old enough. I have 50 acres of property where she will be safe once she's out on her own. I've had her in my care for one week. I think she was about 1-2 weeks old when i found her. After talking to someone who had raised a fawn before, I put her on Calf Maker Milk Replacement. I started her out on two ounces every three hours for the first two days. That's all she would really take. Then moved up to 3 ounces every 4 hours around the clock. For the past two days, I've been giving her 4 ounces every 4 hours. I have fresh dirt available for her at all times and fresh water. I take her out in the evenings and she picks around on clover and raspberry leaves. She picks around at the dirt a little bit but not much. She will not drink water out of the bowl that I have it in, so I try to give her 1-2 ounces every hour or two from a bottle. I giver her small bites of banana and apple when she whines and its not time to eat yet. I stimulate her to urinate after every feeding. She's even gone on her own a couple times. I was stimulating her to defecate after each feeding but she usually only went twice per 24 hour period. It was starting to get runny and yellowish, compared to being dark with a small amount of mucus before, so i backed off a little bit. No blood though. After 3 runny poops, I halved her bottle with pedialyte and added 5mL of kaopectate. I did this twice and it was more solid this morning. She seems happy and is jumping around my house as I write.

Is all of this ok? Is loose yellowish stool ok? Should I be feeding her goat milk replacement instead? Am I feeding her enough? Too much? What is a good rule of thumb for feeding amounts and timing? I also have some Calf Manna all species performance supplement pellets but she's not that interested in them. I truly want her to have the best life she can have. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

This is what we use as a guide at 2 weeks she should poop and pee on her own we use a all species called ultra 24 as far as grain i would just use a feed made for deer the have them at most farm stores hope this helps

I also used Ultra 24 which I bought at TSC mixed with warm water. My doe fawn did really well with it, but she didn't get hard pellets for at least a month. Other than that, I seem to remember that initially her poop was always a bit mushy (never runny), but I may have overstimulated her too, as I was trying too hard I think. I raised her successfully, no illnesses, no parasites. You might want to take a stool sample to the vet to test for any parasites. It's good to get a "picture" of her overall stool health.

Rosa slept in a dog crate for a long while at night and she did really well. Keep her warm, as the airconditioning can get a bit cool for them, especially early on. I always had a blankie for Rosa in her cage.

Many farmers here will mix Formula with "red cap" (or whole cow's milk), but I never did that. When Rosa's stool was too runny, I would add a teaspoon of crushed pumpkin (no spices) into her formula bottle and this would firm her up right away. Otherwise, GOAT MILK from the grocery store (pasteurized) is just about as close to "deer mamma milk" as you can possibly find. It was magical in firming my girl up. It's cheapest at Walmart, but still isn't cheap. Had I had a certified healthy goat farm near my home, I would've only fed her goat milk.

Don't forget to have her stool checked periodically, and at 3 months to vaccinate her. I will post something for you later tonight. Good luck.

Thank you so much Lanasvet and Daywoodwhitetails! The information you both provided is going to be very helpful! I believe Ill switch to Ultra 24. What is the best way to switch her over? Do I need to mix it with what I'm feeding now and slowly back off?

Also, is it necessary to give her water in a bottle since she's not drinking from a dish? I don't want her to become dependent on that and not learn how to get it herself.

i would just leave a bowl of water in her pen she will drink at at some point deer dont drink a whole lot of water as it is i would just switch her straight over

I know you stated you dont want to call anyone but you must understand, it may be illegal in your state to keep the fawn and you could potentially face fines and other possible charges if found out. I would encourage you to check with someone in an official capacity at least as they have shelters already state approved to care for the animals until they can be released back into the wild. I believe in what you are doing, these are great animals but please make sure you are right in your cause.

Understand that but they can also generate money by leaving heavy fines and while I believe in what Violet is doing is just it is also may be illegal. There are facilities that states use that are licensed to handle these types of issues and then they in turn, turn the animal loose. Even though I raise deer as well, I would be compelled to do what Violet is trying to do becasue of the love I have for whitetail deer as do all deer farmers or we would not be in this great business.

Streamline Products,

I appreciate your concern for my well being in this matter. I've done some research online and there don't seem to be any shelters for deer within two hours of my location. It's bad enough that she's not out in the wild with her mom. I don't want to send her that far away from an area that she is somewhat familiar with. Even more than that, I do not trust officials to not euthanize her for some stupid reason. I understand that many people kill deer for sport and that's legal. I don't agree with it being illegal to care for one. I trust myself to take care of her and with the help of this forum (which is amazing) and people I know that have done it (in this area and others) I will protect her right to have a good life with everything in me. Once again I truly appreciate your concern. I hope that didn't sound rude.

Not at all and like I said earlier, I applaud your concern for these great animals. I wish you sucess on helping it to grow to it's fullest potential but please try to keep it as wild as possible so when you release it back into the wild, it will stand a chance of survival against preditors and more importantly, hunters

the State and the lawyers are just generating money!

It was supposed to be a sarcastic remark . I don't think the officials care about the fawns like they care about the money that would change hands if a fawn helper got caught.

Violet, in Kentucky u can call a Vets office and most will take them in raise them until they can be turned backout into thethe wild. Where in Eastern Ky are you? I'm in northeastern part. Sending u a PM with more info I hope will help

Thank you for your well wishes. I want her to remain as wild as possible for those exact reasons. I'm the only person that she is ok around. She is extremely skittish around anyone else, which brings me some peace about her future in a world full of hunters. She is very cautious around our outdoor dogs. Should I keep them away from her?

That's what I'm worried about.

Violet, you should make sure she gets to know all of your dogs, b/c later, she can be startled by them and this will make her go crazy, trying to escape them. Deer can literally die of fear (like rabbits). She can run herself to death or can hurt herself in trying to "escape" them if they run her into circles in her pen. The sooner you can get her living outside in her own pen, the better. She needs to get used to nature. But you need to protect her by building an appropriate pen with areas surrounded by shade cloth for her protection from predators, etc. Violet, you have a lot to learn about this- it's a huge responsibility. Look up on the internet what rehabbers' fencing must be, at least 6-8 ft in height, stockade fencing for fawns with shade ares, etc. Everything can be found on the net.

btw/ you an apply for a license to be a deer rehabber once you have appropriate fencing. read the rules.

I've read all of the specifications for the pen but I can't seem to find any info stating that you can obtain a permit for an orphaned fawn. Everything I read says that they don't issue permits for deer found in the wild. Any ideas on where to look?

As I said, she is very cautious around our outdoor dogs. I have been slowly introducing them to each other. I was unsure if that was a good thing as I am trying to keep her as wild as possible. I wouldnt want her to try to take up with coyotes down the road. She becomes more calm around them each time she sees them. I will keep working on that. Thank you again EVERYONE for your advice. I wouldn't be able to do this without you!
