I have a 1 week old fawn and the first 4 days it had diarreah really bad and i gave it some kaopectate early this morring and it seem to be helping but now it has not pooped! also i ran out of it powered milk yesterday and the coop didnt have any more until tomorrow,i had to feed it some thing so i gave it 2%milk is that ok?

what i use on my farm is red cap whole milk from your grocery store i put it in my bottles then in some hot water until it gets warm and that seems to be working great for me the last three years. For not pooping are you stimulating them?

we were told last year to never give anti diarrheal meds to fawns. Get Albion from your vet tomorrow. I bet the fawn will have explosive diarrhea when it goes again. We gave kaopectate to a fawn last year and he stopped going initially then had bad diarrhea we used albion and pedialyte to keep him hydrated. The diarrhea lasted 2-3 days but then the albion took affect and he is a yearling today and wild as a march hare! good luck and have many wet wipes handy

thanks i just got me some red cap, yeah i am stimulating him...well my dog is LOL! thanks for all the help... i think the diarreah is just bother me, bc he is just running around and happy and is eating great with out a fuss! he is back to the diarrea but it also has changed in color b4 it was a yellowish now its a dark brown. i have lots of pedialyte here handy for my kids just in case. So do i need to rotate the pedialye and milk or just pedialye for the day? thanks for all the help!!! my kids are just falling in love with him and i would hate to know i am doing the wrong things!

You might want to rotate feedings with an electrolite then milk if it looks like shes getting dehydrated. Pull her skin up between her shoulders and it should snap right back . If it goes back slow she's dehydrated. Give the dog a break and take a baby wipe and make her pee. If it comes out clear your ok but if yellow color then dehdrated. If the scours don't clear up you will have to find out why. If the poo has any blood in it you will need to treat imeadiatley. Your vet can check for ecoli or coccidia or a clostridial bacteria. It could even be a parasite. Treatments could very but a save bet could be a shot of baytril 1/2 cc sq or perhaps an over the counter like Sulmet. Young ones like that are so vulnerable you really have to watch them. I assume you are giving it plenty of fresh dirt or possibly a probiotic as often the young ones do not have the proper balance of good bacteria in the gut to digest the milk. You also might want to keep her eating about 4 to 6 oz about every 6 hours. I know red cap user say they feed all they will take but when they are having trouble sometimes a little less is best. Good luck and keep us posted. Rick

First off is it Direaha or does it look like the consistancy of tooth paste. If it looks like tooth past that is ok while they are on formula. Once they start eating some solids they will start doing the pellets. But these guys are right it doesnt hurt to put a little pumpkin in their bottle. I just mix about a half a can to a gal of milk and that seems to do the trick.

Is there a deer rehabilitator in your area? You should find out. You will need to spend some money on vet visits and on getting that adorable little fawn vaccinated and properly cared for. Vets usually will not help people who do not have breeder and wildlife licenses... Good luck. Please be smart about this.

Goat milk and pumpkin is a great way to get that pasty poop more firmed up. Get the stool sample, and treat the "scours" immediately. Or else, find a good rehabber quickly.

And if you feel you ABSOUTLY MUST be the one that cares for the little tyke because you cant find a re-habber. Tell your local vet that you are dealing with a baby goat. I have a license and am completly legal this was my first yr with fawns I asked my local vet questions and he scratched his head. I then said how would you treat a baby goat and he knew right what to do. It's not ideal but it will be better than nothing. Biologically speaking deer are closer to goats than any other commonly treated domestic animal.

thanks for all the help!!! the pumpkin is working great!!!! he never was dehydrated thank goodness, he is running around with the dogs and chasing the kids in the yard!!! thank thank thank you all for the great advice!!!! our little oscar thanks you all to :) also we got him off red cap milk and he is on goat milk,

I too am a first time fawn mother. Mine also had diarrhea as she was getting used to the goats milk. Someone here told me to add pumpkin to her bottles(1 tbs. per bottle)The diarrhea cleared up within 2 feedings! She's been fine since. Good luck.
