I would like to hear about some of the history of whitetail deer farming.

Who are some of the farmers that have raising deer the longest?

Did anyone raise deer in the 80's? 70's? Etc.

Yes they did! The Flees family of Wilderness Whitetails come to my mind. They have been not only raising whitetails for over 30 years. They have been building pedigrees for that long. In my opinion, (and thats all it is) they produce some of the best Doe genetics out there. Their bucks are known for producing daughters that produce bigger sons consistantly. Like I said only my opinion.

A guy named Jeff Snyder has been in forever, Word has it that he got Russ Walk into the deer business. Jeff in a very low key guy and likes to stay under the radar!

Dale Kremsreiter, Ron Radies, Guyland VanAsten those are names from the past. Bloodlines from all three of them have made MAJOR impacts on the current industry. Look through the latest Top 30 book and you will find a doe that sold who has a Kremsreiter doe in the short pedigree listed in the booklet. Radies sold the Flees's deer back in the day to help them establish. Guyland's bloodlines are also still marketed through the top sales. That is just a sample of the real history of WI whitetails.

FYI, did you know the very first deer farm in WI was started with the intent that should the wild population decline to a dangerously low number the state could come back to that farm for more deer to add to the wild? Funny how the gov has changed over the years :(

Roger, Can you document that the farms where started for the preservation of the spieces. It would be good ammo to use against the anti's. Gary

Not whitetail, however Solomon raised fallow for his table. No doubt with a bit of searching there would be older accounts of deer farming.

Cheers Sharkey

In 1950 the Deer Ranch in Northern Michigan was started. I became the third owner in 1988 and sold in 2011. I started Martin Lake Deer Farm and I'm starting my 26th year raising whitetails. My book Deer Whisperer/25 years of raising whitetails will be printed this spring.
