Just a message to everyone affected by this bad snowstorm coming in the midwest.

We are preparing our herd the best we can and wish you all the best getting through this. We are expecting 20+" of snow here with winds reaching up to 40mph. We are opening up a building and bedding it down with hay to our bottle feds from this year so that hopefully they go inside for shelter and also bringing in an older doe to that pen so that she will have a better chance to survive. We've put up more wind breaks and have made everyone as comfortable as we can.

They are saying this is the worst storm since 1968.

Susan it sound like you have done the best you can to prepare for the storm .I hope everything goes alright let us know how it goes

Good luck Susan, and everyone else affected by this. Here, we are battling rain, rain, rain

Birds are fed, dogs are fed, deers are fed.....I'm as ready as I'll be.:D I can remember some bad ones since '68. We are going to get it all...rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow....9-12 inches. Who knows? I always think the deer take this better than 95 with flies!!

Susan,

Just went through the storm before you here in Montana. We had minus -24 F with snow and 40 to 50 mile hour wind. We didn't lose any deer. I think the guys with rain and cold do worse than us guys in the snow areas. Just keep up the grain so they can keep warm. Good luck

I wish you the best Redwood. I hope everything goes well. Sounds as if you have prepared very well, they should use the cover. I know the storm we just had here in the northeast, we had 22" dropped at my house, and the deer used the "shack" I have out there for them. They stayed in the cover and stayed tight together. I put food and water in there which helped them stay there.

Good luck.

Jack...glad to hear you came through all right. I'm sure they will be fine, but how can animals live through that? It amazes me every year (even before deer!) that they survive what nature throws at them in the north. But, like you said, I'm sure they can survive better with just being cold than being cold and wet.

Everything is fed and bedded and prepared as much as we can as their caretakers. Now, I'm just waiting for my kids to arrive home from school safely...then, let 'er buck!!

We just had our first real snow of the season... a whole 3 inches , that gives us 5 inches total, temp has been hovering around -11C and forecast for the next 10 days is -11 to -14 and sunny, with very little wind. Time to do some serious fishing. We just got a semi load of feed in and that will last us until sometime in may.

Susan, we just went through a similar instance last weekend.30 inches of snow and 16 degrees. The deer loved it. After it stopped they played almost all day. Even the Bucks. As of today we have 16 inches after it has settled and melted. Good Luck and Merry Christmas. Allen

Susan, Good luck hope it goes well for you. They say 3-9" and 20-30mph winds not as bad as you guy's but i'd rather be bottle feeding than dealing with this crud! lol

We got 2.5" of rain in 2 hours, winds gusting to 40 mph, and temperature dropped 20 degrees. I lost one doe to it, nowhere dry to lay, even under the shelter had 3" standing water. Too wet and too cold. Pneumonia thrives in this wet weather.

Robbie,

Sorry about your loss. Wet and wind is worse than cold, wind and snow. We get the wet, cold and wind in spring and we sometimes do badly.

Robbie, I hate to hear of your loss. We are now getting the rain on top of the snow. I keep my fingers crossed every time I go to the pens. Take care and thanks for your help last month. Allen

Here in north Mo. got 2 days rain about 2" then temp dropped 30 degrees 8" snow 30 mph winds for 2 days 4' drifts. I already hate winter ready for spring!

Robbie - sorry to hear about your doe :( Hope you and the rest of your "deer" family are doing well. I'll say a prayer for you and everyone else.

Gail
