Call whomever does your extension. I bought some semen off a buck that had died and was told (but don't take my word on this one) that you should immediately cut off the scrotum and put on ice and that you have approximately 4 hours to get the semen to the vet, university, etc. where they can extract and extend.
PS the semen stuck a few does for me, so apparently it was successful.
Contact Dr. Pugh. He is retierd from the Auburn Vet School and has alot of experience with collecting deer. I don't have his number with me but you can get his number from 334-319-0617.

I don't agree with putting the testicles on ice. I have been told that you can shock the sperm and kill them if you cool them too quickly. I was told to put them in an ice chest, wrapped in newspaper or something to insulate them, and to let them cool on their own at a very slow pace while you hustle and get them to whomever does your collection/processing work for you.
I agree with Robbie in that the testicles should cool very slowly. We have our mule deer testicles samples placed in a six pack cooler which has a ice pack on the bottom. On top of the ice pack is a 1 inch styro covering the ice pack. We then place a good layer of crumpled newspaper down on which we have the testicles in the scrotum placed. Cover the testicles with another layer of crumpled newspaper. This allows the testicles to cool slow with no shock to the sperm. Tape the six pack cooler shut and if shipping place in a cardboard box and ship overnight mail. We have found this will give the best results for sperm recovery. I also feel you have 72 hours to collect the sperm but of coarse the sooner the better. The people I have that send me collected samples have gotter them to me by overnight mail within 24 hours of death and we are having very good collections.
