How do you stop a buck from rubbing? Here's why

There is not much of anything that I'm aware of short of leaving the horns on seems to help some like this. I have seen strips of heavy plastic and rubber screwed to the nubs but with not much success.

The bad thing is that if it continues to do it each year he will grow together and will shed one nub and are pretty narrow.

Best of luck

The dreaded shot that nobody likes!!! Medroxypregesterone and he will stop in a couple days. Had one do the same last year and he is has hard horn in the center of his head this year. He did the same this year and he got a dart and he was done rubbing in 3 days

I think Clearview hit the nail on the head (or should I say nub) so to speak. I think your situation would be an excellent time to use the Medroxypregesterone. Good luck and let us know if you try it.  Allen

I wonder if this stuff would stop all the male problems on the farm?  I mean if you only need one or two breeders could a guy just cut the racks of the 1 and 2 year old's say Sept 1st, give them the shot, they loose buttons and all *** drive in say 3 days and then just lay around with the does or like the does for the rest of the year?

I say that would kinda take some pressure or worry off the shoulders of the farmer!!!

Thanks. Too much to ask on my part i guess. It would be awesome to get their jets stopped in early fall and then spend their time and energy putting on body mass instead of running it off fighting with each other!

before we used it we were told not to use after Jan 15 from their experience or it would adversely affect thier growth.

We had 2 cut offs that were fighting with raw heads and gave to them around the 1st of december.  Their jets were cooled in a couple days.   The 3 yo has lost his knobs but the 2 yo has not.

yea i should have said December or January however i have used it in February with good results. i think as long as you don't get to far away from there natural drop time you will be ok.

Have you considered the fact that this buck might have an infection around the base of his antlers? This would cause them to rub like this and would stop once the antlers shed.

The dreaded shot indeed. LOL geez on another thread some were slamming pretty hard that anyone who would use it is giving the anti's ammunition to use against us. Or that users were somehow to stupid to use other methods to avoid fighting bucks. Glad to see there are those who agree it is a tool available if needed. I myself am thinking about trying it this winter for the first time so I can combine some bucks before fawning season starts.

Gary I had thought of that also but background of the buck is he is bottlefed and like to show his "toughness" off to everyone. So I am not overlooking that but I am also not feeling it. If it were to be infection. Would taking the nubs off still be the answer along with antibiotics ?

if there was infection underneath his knobs the best thing is for them to fall off, so antibiotics and the shot would be what I would choose to do

I guess there are some that can run their farms without the use of drugs if there is a way around it. As you read above, someone used it in Sept and their antlers grew weird this year, So lets see...is there a chance this stuff could do more harm than good?  To each their own, Kinda like some cattle farms go organic.

Be sure to show us how well it works out for ya if you use it! .

How do you know the antlers grew wierd because of medroxyprogesterone????

There are many factors that effect antler growth nutrition, health, genetics etc.

All i know is what post number #7 said above. Sounds like the drug could have had an adverse effect in that situation!  Coming from someone that sounds like they are in the know!!

I gave a yearling the shot last year. This buck had a ugly small rack. You would say a cull. This year he has a beautiful huge rack probably in the 180ies, He put on over 100 inches this year. Worked for me and I will use it again.

What was the reason for the shot last year?

I think what most people forget is that any animal can have an adverse reaction to ANYTHING that is administered!!! Not very common but it happens.
