HSUS Strikes Florida

I'm really confused on how DNR and HSUS etc can openly and routinely claim that CWD stems from deer farms. Every article I read claims deer farms are in a roundabout way responsible for the disease. If this was factual there would not be CWD in the wild. At what point can the deer farmer file suit against the state for having contaminated deer in the wild? I know that is a stretch but really the openness that these agencies claim that deer are raised like puppy mills and CWD is created and spread as a result is just unbelievable. It is a disease, the more you test the more you find it is that simple... Has anyone taken time to plot number of tests versus number of cases? I would be surprised to see the % increasing. To me that is enough to validate that the disease is not spreading, but then again I have some common sense. At one point Cancer did not exist now everything causes cancer and a huge percentage of people get some form cancer in their lifetime.

We just finished the final hearing in Pensacola surrounding the closing of the Florida borders to the importation of all CWD susceptible species. As expected the Florida Game Commission voted unanimously to close those borders and then passed an executive order that closed them immediately. What was sad was to hear various members of the Florida Deer Association side with HSUS and other animal welfare groups as well as hunting groups in support of closing the borders. What was outrageous was them using CWD and the protection of the wild herd to disguise the real reason for their support of the border closure, when they have brought literally hundreds of out of state deer into Florida to establish their personal herds. Other states around the country were watching Florida to see what the game commission would do and I fear all this has done is unleash a hungry beast who is not going to be happy with just border closures. A NRA representative was overheard outside the hearing room remark that once the borders were closed they were coming after the breeders within the state next.

We were told several weeks ago that the Florida closure was already decided but felt we had to assist where we could and stand with those deer breeders in the state who truly wanted open borders. I feel that this decision today will only cause a domino effect across the country. Our industry needs to wake up and realize that short-term economic gains are just that; short-term gains. In the long run the industry and breeders will be the ultimate losers

Why can't we as Deer Farmers file a class action suit against all this non sense.

There is plenty of proof out there that shows we did not start it.

How can we let the DNR's of the country and everyone else continue to post false facts about this disease. There has to be something legally that can be done to prevent false claims. Hell if we posted false information about the DNR's there attorney's would be all over us.

Sorry to hear this.

I can't believe state attorney generals aren't getting involved. This is commerce restrictions. Trade between states goes both ways. Do we stop drinking Florida orange juice?

I wish you would post the names of the Deer Breeders who were in support of this. They should be booted from any associations...

Completely agree Barry. How could they possibly be so short sighted? They just cut their own throat.

I was thinking the same thing.

I agree, we need a list of those who sided with HSUS, public display please. Just a shame, I know that Laurie, Charly and Doc Shippley trVeled to testify on behalf of those who wanted open borders. I'm sure there were more, and what a shame, unbelievable.

If anybody has facebook you can see who the ones are that are buying up all the Pa bucks they can get their hands on. Talked to an amish friend at the Ohio sale and he was shipping 10 does to a farm in Florida and im sure that farm is one of the ones that support the close of the state.

They think they will fill their pockets fast.

On the flip side... some of those farms buying deer were probably trying to get them like anyone else. Doesn't necessarily mean they supported closed borders, just that they knew it was a possibility. I know one guy buying lots of deer that's openly been opposed to closed borders.

Yup..Cant argue that one but these ones were going to one that supports closed borders. It will really come back to bite them if the state now decides to stop any in state movements from farms that have any animals on their farm from cwd positive states!

We have enough problems fighting those that want us out of business without fighting our own industry. It was very discouraging for Shawn Schaffer, Laurie Seale, Cliff Shipley, and I to travel to Florida, to help our industry and to help some Florida breeders who want free trade, to have to listen to the representatives from NRA and HSUS spread their lies and half truths. It was even worse to have deer breeders such as Irving Roberts, Donnie Young, and FDA Vice President Phillip Bryant stand up and support the position of HSUS and NRA for closure of the borders with the pretense of protecting the wild whitetail populations and at the same time knowing these breeders and others have brought hundreds of deer into Florida to develop their own herds. The FDA lobbyist even testified that NADEFA should stay out of Florida. Others who testified for closed borders also said that all out of state breeders testifying should stay out of the state of Florida and that it was obvious only those out of state breeders testifying for open borders were from endemic states who only wanted to sell their deer.

After the vote was taken and the border closure was passed unanimously there was a round of applause from the FDA members who were present in the audience. How disheartening was this for those of us who traveled long distances and attempted to help this industry?

Must have been awful Charlie. Thanks as always for your unending support for what's right in our industry.

Also a big thanks to Shawn, Laurie, Cliff and all of the others that traveled to share a voice for all of us.

There are several deer farming websites that are run by one of these Fla. breeders. Pa, Ohio, Indiana or several other states have farms advertising on them and paying money to someone who wants closed borders. Type in a state name and breeders.com and you will find them.

I would boycott any semen or deer that these Florida farmers try to sell.......I would hope all the auctions refuse to sell their animals as well..........they need to be sent a message....if they don't want to be apart of the industry they should not benefit at all from it!!! Just my opinion.....

Mike Kerry, I am gonna have to correct you alittle on your previous comment about the guy buying a lot of deer in recent weeks wanting the borders closed.....Steve Munz from Galaxy Whitetail Solutions was one of only two Florida deer farmers to testify against border closing....I agree that if anybody would stand to benefit short term it would probably be him for the way he is now setup but he told me he can not stand the injustice of it all....

On another note, I had conversation with Courtney Roberts this summer who is the owner of the websites, deer breeders.com...She is also Irving Roberts daughter in law, who testified strongly in favor of closing the borders...In my conversations with Courtney she flat denied her family having anything to do with wanting the borders closed..I will now have to call her and tell her to remove my farm from her website as I will not deal with anyone so blatantly untruthful...In closing I would like to thank Shawn Shaefer, Charlie and Laurie Seale and Dr. Cliff Shipley for traveling down there and standing on the firing line, testifying on behalf of the common sense principles that seems to be coming rarer each day.....again, thank you...

Well i guess to that i would say IF i am wrong i stand corrected but to MY knowledge I was told by a friend that some of the ones buying some deer from HIM, were one of the same that were infact in favor of a closing of the border. Hence i mentioned no names. The facebook post was a statement made to the fact that many deer were on the move, Not by whom was or was not in favor.

Not sure if the same thing is going on up here yet because i have not heard of anyone that is involved with our Assoc that is in favor.

This has been coming for a while to FL. I tried to get established before it closed, but was unable to. I stopped construction of my Pens last fall when the Florida borders were unofficially closed and moved everything to Oklahoma. Thankfully Wilmer Martin and Samuel King worked with me boarding the ones I purchased from them over the past several months. That being said I do have some Full Northern breed does on a farm in Florida that I need to sell or move to Oklahoma soon if any FL farmers are interested in them send me a message.
