"Hunter" steals animal from high-fence ranch

I sold a couple loads of shooters to a ranch in southern MO this fall, and the other day the manager called me and wanted pictures of the deer he'd already bought. I was a little worried, but then found out that someone had been bragging around town how he and his brother were having a contest to see how many each man could kill from the ranch and drag under the fence. So, the local warden in that county went to the taxidermy shop, found a deer that had a hole in each ear, and confiscated it. I found antlers shed from the same deer last year, and when the DNA matches, he'll be in big trouble! The ranch manager told me there would be federal charges, but what would make them federal? I can't figure that part out...I'd say they've got him nailed, though. I'd sure like to see this story written and published in as many outdoor magazines they can get it into. People have to know not to be stupid!

Yep - if DNA matches up, it would be great to see it published, and speak it loud and clear on how they were caught through DNA. Should certainly help deter others from entertaining the thoughts of trying something like that in the future!

Good thing you had his sheds from the year before Phillip! :)

Them boys are had if that is the buck!

A few weeks ago doing fence checks we found one gate hanging by just the hot wire. Someone had taken off the hinges to enter. After checking the hidden cameras we clearly saw 2 young adults dismantle and enter. Thank God they left within a few minutes and no deer escaped. The next day we had their photos in the hands on local law enforcement. They knew the troubled young adults and were at their door in short order. Not sure how they will be charged this has never happened to Apple Creek. Other than hidden cameras and regular fence checks how do others protect their property?

I protect mine on reputation. Not a good reputation, just a reputation. We should have sent out the News Reports of the guy from Oklahoma. Ten years probation, restitution, a large fine plus court costs and lifetime revocation of his hunting priviledges nationwide. Cost him somewhere around 50 to 60 grand. Whitetails of Oklahoma was the reason he got caught and the reason he was prosecuted to that extreme.

Hey Scott,

I am glad to hear things turned out ok for you with this break in. I hope these two get the right punishment for their crime. I think if word gets out that these two were caught trying to break into Apple Creek will go along ways to others that may have the same ideas.......unfortunately, I think you are doing all that you can to protect against this kind of stuff!! good Luck Scott!

Here in Alabama I think we hold the record for punishment for this...

A montgomery man had deer at his home, and had even paved a pull off place for folks to look at his deer. He was not a breeder. Two criminals from Mobile killed one of his bucks and got away. A $10,000 reward and the moron beating up his girlfriend got the dime dropped on him several months later.

Both men were charged with felony theft. The shooter had three prior felony convictions and he got the three strike rule applied to him= life sentence in prison. His buddy got ten years.

As said earlier the Federal Lacy Act would only apply if the deer was taken across a state line. It would be real nice if it was as the Lacy Act carries heavy fines and penalties, way more than state convictions do.

The best thing about criminals is that they can't keep their mouths shut. One cannot cure stupid.

the third week in october we had someone remove about 100 ft. of our fence, they didn't cut it they acually took the staples out and droped the fence. Now here in PA. the PDFA. has a reward fund that is bast on the type of offence that has been committed. Runs from 2000.up to 10,000.It is paid to the person that gives up the culpert and gets a conviction. We put that reward in the news papers and on local radio but no luck yet,but at least the persons that did this know I am not the only one trying find them. We have been raising whitetails for 23yrs. and this is our first magger issue like this.We lost one of my best breeders and still hope we get the ones responsible. I guess it could always be worse, they didn't shoot any. Now we are going to look in cameras and hope that helps in the future.

This is why I just bought Antler Lock cameras. You can get an 8 camera system for around $2000 and install it yourself. It records 24/7 and you can cover a LOT with 8 cameras. Double it and get 16 cameras and nobody will ever mess with your stuff without getting their picture taken. Put one on your house and your reduced cost of homeowners insurance should just about pay for the cameras over time.

I like the way they sell them too. I started out with just a two camera system (dont have too many deer right now). You can add cameras as you get more money or have a need for more cameras. You dont have to buy the whole 4 camera or 8 camera system.

What kind of power source do you need for the cameras, would they work with a battery and a solar panel or do you have to have them within a few hundred feet of the recorder box and hooked to a regular 110 power source? I'd love to have one that I could view from my computer at any time all the way around my ranch.
