I love this site. I check it everyday and read old threads constantly. I am trying to soak up as much information as possible, but I need more.

Are there other good sites or references that you can give me to further my study? I doubt i find anything this good, but I would love to know if you guys have other resources.

Private message me if you feel that would be better. Thanks in advance.

You found the best one. Alot of nice, informative people on this site. I don't know of any others with this caliber of members..

Ok tell us a little about yourself. What do you currently do for a occupation? Are you raising deer now or wanting to raise them?  What exact imfo are you looking for?

Most of us would love to be completely open but Ithere are so many Trolls out there that most people are hesitant to say much in public forum.   Everyone loves to show their deer off but look how many times they have been video taped in secrecy and then everything is twisted and all of our images are tarnished.  There is very limited information on raising whitetails and it is mostly in this forum or found in conversation amongst breeders.  Study everything on here then you'll still have different experiences.  As Deer MGR 200 says your topic is vague and people need to know what you are trying to figure out and why.

I understand. I am located in south alabama. We do not currently have our deer but they have been purchased and are waiting AI and back-up. They will arrive in Feb. We will be somewhat small by comparison. Starting with 11 or so does and limited resources.

I am looking to get information on what I will be facing next year. I dont want to be caught off guard by something. I have done a ton of reading but I am afraid I have missed something critical.

Fawns are probably the thing I would like advice on the most. I feel like a new parent that doesnt have a clue what to expect with their first kid. So they read all the books they can.

You can always post any question you have on here. The same basic questions are often repeated over and over but they always get answered. No question is a stupid question. Whoever is selling you the deer should help mentor you or you might be buying from the wrong person.

If you are in south alabama, I hope you don't have much northern blood in your deer. They are hard to keep alive this far south. I tried northerns with no success. I switched to southern does and ai'ed together Texas bucks and have not lost a deer to Ehd since. Five years. Hope it continues because my deer are exposed to midges all summer.

Deerchaser - Our deer were born and raised local (south alabama) but they are from northern bloodlines. We almost went with southern deer but just didnt feel we could get at least a 150 rack in less than 3 years. Making the profit margin very small by the time you keep them for 3+ years. I do like the thought of putting the texas line into our northern deer to increase their survivability. Especially if our fawns and yearlings  cant take the fly.

Southern deer line bred to Texas will give you more than that at 2. I have a typical two year old 3/4 texas and line bred gladiator that will score 190. Also have a one year old that is 3/4 texas, 1/8 northern and 1/8 southern that will score 160.

Fawns are not hard to handle. They just take a lot of time if you bottle feed. I use straight red cap milk and have no problems. I only bottle feed a few doe fawns every year. Most stay on the mother.

I wish you the best with your deer but remember there is a reason northern deer do not exist in the wild in south alabama. Maybe it will work for you but it did not work for me. If you are willing to spray, it may work but my goal is to raise deer to stock my preserve. I do not spray anything but ants! I hate those little suckers.

It is hard to see those big northerns and not try it! I had to try it myself. Good luck.
