This past spring the Senate Pro Temp who has been very critical of our industry and who has denied our bills from being heard called for a summer study committee to take our issue on. Instigated by the story of Lies the Indy star writer Sabalow spewed out Senator Long wanted the committee to consider possible boarder closures and possibly more. The first hearing was highly orchestrated by the DNR to try and put the nail in the coffin, However they overplayed their hand and shot themselves in the foot. Last week the committee was invited to actually tour my hunting preserve and see what its all about. We spent about 3 hours covering the property, stands and facility. Seeing is believing. The committee had their final meeting today and made their recommendation that the Indiana Legislature take the issue up and resolve it once and for all. The actually pressed the DNR director into admitting he would like to see the legislature resolve the issue and went as far as saying he would work with the legislature to help bring closure. This is a huge move in the right direction for us and I will be glad to see it over after 9 yrs of court battles. Sabalow and the antis were there and did not like the 8 to 3 vote by the committee to move forward in seeking a resolution, they were hoping for a recommendation to close the borders or worse..
Hotrod this is how it starts, Proper first hand in the field education is the first step to get people to see things as they really are as to they way its shown to them . Especially the sabalow kid that does not know or has never studied the ethics of journalism. Glad to hear your bringing this to light and people can make properly informed decisions based on first hand knowledge.

I've between in a pi$$in match with an idiot on the DesMoinesRegister. He says the brakkes do not deserve indemnity for their FAILED business plan. Really? He had no answer when I told him the DNR manages HIS herd and he is basically getting that for free because a license doesn't make a dent in the budget of
the dnr. This is how we need to attack these people.

Let us not forget we are negotiating from a position of strength. A lot of time and hard work by Hotrod has been invested in this battle. We should not allow any regulation to be put into our bill that puts us at a disadvantage competitively to our neighbors. If we are administered taxes or fees beyond what the preserves, for example,in the state of Ohio incur to begin operations our of hunting ranches or later while operating we will be hamstrung. Making money in the deer industry is getting tougher and paying additional fees to the state for our privately owned animals that our neighbors don't have to pay will make it very tough for us to compete with them long term. I hope and pray we have the backbone this time to not allow the DNR to amend our legislation.
Obviously the disease issue is going to be the main talking point and I understand that. Im concerned as well about animal health as is every person in this industry. I am seriously thinking how something should be input that requires the DNR to test at least 50% of the wild deer harvested. We are getting hammered because we are the only ones finding CWD because we are the only ones testing. Cant you see the DNR arguing that its not necessary for them to test. They would have to admit a couple very important things. The first is that they dont feel its enough of a threat to allocate money for it. The legislature would laugh them out of the room making that argument and then turning around and giving the gloom and doom report on how devastating this industry is and it must be shut down because of the disease threat. I think its something we definitely need to talk about.
I think the DNR should test at 100%. Make them prove they don't have CWD. Testing at 1/2 of 1%, they won't find it.

This needs to be addressed at USAHA. How can they regulate us out of business for a disease while leaving the free-ranging animals unmonitored. It is simple...double standards. I cannot express the importance of attending USAHA. Had I not gone, I am certain we would still be feeding our deer today.
