leg problem ?

I got a call from a man yesterday about a doe he has that has front leg problems. She's a two year old bottle raised deer. He has been feeding her mostly horse sweet feed with natural browse(honeysuckle) added.

He noticed she was pulling out the hair on her front legs, then she started having walking problems on her front legs. She got down, he treated with penicillin shots. When I looked at her yesterday she was walking slowly, hobbling along.

She would appreciate any help from the forum members on cause and treatment. I have my own ideas but want to see what the members say...

left knee joint is swollen worse than pic shows

blue color on legs is liniment....

So from the sounds of it there is no open wound and both front legs are being affected? From the picture it seems just the left leg is swollen at the knee and she doesnt want to apply pressure. Has the owner actually seen her pulling hair from her legs or assuming based on appearance? Ryan

Hi Ryan. He saw her chewing on the front legs. Both front knees are swollen, left is much worse.

I have never seen this before...so without knowing what else to do...I would jump on that situation with both feet with a long regiment of some powerful antibiotics, and wouldn't wait another day.

She looks thin as well.

This is inexperience speakin here, so maybe someone that's seen this will respond.

Hoping the best!!!

Just a guess but I think I would switch from the sweet feed to a better feed and give some vitamin shots. Looks to be lacking minerals is usually the cause of chewing pulling of hair.

The deer does not look well nourished to me but again only my option !

Best of Luck

Probably put my foot in my mouth here, but she is either very sick or undernurished. Does she have grass or hay to eat? Has she been wormed? Stool samples taken? If she was mine I would be very active with vit b, probiotics, dex, and selenium. I don,t think the sweet feed probably has the right mix for deer. She looks like she is very thin to me, yes her knees are swelled but this could be to improper diet. Is she eating alright? Just my opinion from a picture.

Im with Mr. Scott on this one. She is either lacking something mineral wise thats causing further ailments, or an ailment causing the lack of nutrition. Maybe its just the picture but her posture seems strange to me, has a hunched up look to her body. Very interested in this.

Thats where i was at with the pic. She needs some help in the diet and mineral dept. I would do total overhaul on that girl!

That Mr Scott guy has no fear!

gentlemen, I appreciate your comments. I agree that she is underweight, and more than likely due to lack of proper nutrition.

I gave her thiamine, 300mgXthree doses. Wormed her. Advised NO MORE sweet feed, and gave him advise on pelleted deer feed, also warm, dry bedding and shelter.

Ryan, she does walk hunched over, prolly because of her legs/feet.

no foot in mouth Dennis, I asked for comments. She is eating ok, not as well as a month ago according to owner. I also gave bo-se, and probiotics. Vit b prolly a good idea also. thanks.
