Lethargic Mama's?

I have a first time mama to give triplets Wednesday morning. I waited till that afternoon prior to the twelve hour mark to tag and give shots ect. One big girl and two runty bucks. I fixed a bottle and the bigger of the two bucks drank 2 oz. The smaller of the two I could not get to drink and I also noticed he had a reasonable amount of bowel movement set up on his tail. My first thoughts is that he is getting no attention. I moved all three babies and mama in a 100'x250' pen. I also put a couple of my deer pets in with her to keep her calm or help out when they freshen. I just checked them and the mom was up with them however I cannot catch her feeding them. I offered the bottle to all three but only both bucks drank. They both got 2 to 2 1/2 oz each. What I noticed on the smallest one was that mama had just about cleaned its tail and rear clean. My concern is since the two runts r so small that I question if they can reach long legged mama right now. If I help feed them three times a day till they r big enough to reach mama, will she finish caring for them till weaning or not? Her milk bag don't look all that big and keep in mind its her first time! Any comments or suggestions appreciated - Jason DCW:D

I feel your pain, I just had a yearling doe bred to x-factor have a doe and buck fawn and watched her let the doe nurse 1 time. The next day she wouldn't let it touch her and I thought it was because she knew I was in the pen but i had my doubts because her poop hadn't been cleaned off, next day found it dead, turned out she was just a non-mothering yearling doe so I pulled the little buck fawn and got him to take about 3 ounces and then the next day he was dead, I guess it was too late. I just had another yearling double Rold Gold doe bred to x-factor have a single buck fawn and she is mothering the heck out of it, lickin it constantly and whacking any other doe that comes near her and trying to run em all away from him, he looks great so far, rain is just starting here and suppose to continue for 4 more days. I'm so stressed I can't sleep now after the first wreck, I guess that's part of deer farming.

Thanks for sharing sdbigbucks. I'm not new to this kind of thing, its just I've taken for granted being blessed with good mamas over the years. Ive bottle raised in the past , Its that i dont have the time to. Good mamas + proven big sons on ground + pedigree +DNA equals perfection in my book.

Good mommas definatly make the job easier. My wreck happened on the only 2 days I was tied up 30 miles away from dusk till dark, I'm still sick about it. My other little X-Factor buck fawn is goin 100 miles an hour and today I finally had to put him and his momma in a pen by themselves, she would not lay down or even stand still for 5 seconds, runnin around whackin the crap outa the other deer that would come within 60 yards of her baby and actually chased one of em into the fence pretty hard. Anybody ever had one so worried about another deer coming near her fawn??

Yup we had twin doe fawns from our geronimax/walker doe bred to our lonewood son tonight and in the morning they will be brought in.With the weather we are having up this way they all are goin on the bottle..Boys and girls!!

Ok guys, great news! I saw her nursing the biggest fawn. While she was nursing, her son walked up and nursed. I was ecstatic to say the least. I think ill still sneak a bottle till they are big enough to satisfy me. Imprinting if you will. To answer your question sdbigbucks, I had a doe today (about to pop) and she was definitely acting Moody! If any deer came anywhere around her last year's son, she would knock fire from em! I m thinking she s getting close. 6:15pm today kaboom! Babies!!!! She is a Sudden Impact daughter that freshened to 2-Free Agent's !!! I will post what she had in the morning! Thanks for the advice Wayne. Hope all is going well on everybody else's farm.-Jason DCW;)

My advice to all deer farmers is to give each fawn a clolostrum supplement at birth. You can buy the paste for goats and lambs. The reason is simple. If the mother doesn't nurse them correctly, by the time you figure it out, may be to late. Also, when you have older and younger does together, which I do, sometimes the older does or does that already have fawns try to nurse the newborns as well. Obviously their colostrum is already gone and the new babies don't get enough. Just something I do. Good luck.

Good advice!!! I had 2 big sir buck fawns and mother did not feed more than once, we got frozen goat colstrum from local goat farmer, hope I got it in them in time!! Now the mother has a cough and lays around!! hit her once with draxxin , not getting worse but still laying around, and of course she is my most expensive doe isnt that how it always is!! Good luck!!!

Tim I agree its something that should be given before the twelfth hour. With that said sufficient time And space to nurse and bond as well. Thanks for your input. Oh by the way, triplets on them Free Agent's -1 girl 2 boys. Get this, the biggest one died! I guess mom laid on it and smothered it as it was still laying in the birthing site. It had been cleaned ambil. Cord and all. $%@& happens! Always to the best. In the words of Rusty Carroll-"ill take the runt every time"!

SD,

Mine is DuraVet Lamb and Kid Supplement paste. I give each fawn 7 1/2 cc and I can do 4 fawns per tube. They cost about $7.00 here at Atwoods.

If in doubt.....pull the fawns because your first instinct is usually right! Just pulled 2 huge buck fawns this morning from a first time mom. Brought them in, gave them a bottle and sucked right away. If they take a nipple from the bottle without a fight...they aren't getting taken care of out in the pen. A crying fawn in the pen is a dieing fawn is the best advice I've ever heard and it hangs on my fridge at all times.

I believe all three are going to make it just fine. I've been supplementing them two boys twice a day. I have noticed mom is feeding all three. I'm just helping out. Getting them healthy faster. They are growing like weeds! Susan that is exactly how I feel.
