My herd is on less than 2 acres and lives on sandy soil.

How often should I lime? When?

Hydrated? How much, heavy, just a dusting?

Do I have to till it in?

We have very close conditions to you we put 150lbs per acre of pellitized lime 2 to 3 times a year depending on how much moisture you are getting just broadcast the lime on the ground .

Lime will help get the soils PH down closer to 7% on our ground here in Illinois. That is the prefered ph for clover and alfalfa which lets it reach its nutritional best. It also kills many of the parisites that live in the soil that could become a problem in a closed enviroment that we endure. We like to use limestone rock around our feeders where we know every deer in that pen will visit everyday. Not only will it keep it from becoming a muddy loblloly in the spring it alo keeps those parasites in check. Rick

Thanks Rick!

I have trouble in 2 of my pens with standing water. If I lime my pens when they are dry, and then it rains and I have my standing water again that these knuckle heads drink out of in place of the clean and cold I supply them, could that be a problem for them drinking the ''limed up water''??

i don`t know for sure if that would harm them or not.however i am liming all the time and if it was bad i would think i would be the first to know.i see them doing the same thing drinking from puddles.who knows, maybe that would be better for them than drinking muddy buggie water. robert

Thanks Robert for your replies. My pens are 1 acre, how much would you recommend I put on? Cost? I am on sand, if that makes a difference.

Thank you guys for all your responses on this. I thought the pelleted lime ws for "sweetening" the soil or prepping it for planting. I'm needing to sanitize my soil. I thought you used hydrated lime powder. Is this not the case?
