Question about lime in pastures. Is there a differene in the lime that you use as far as barn lime or just regular feild lime? any idea of pounds per acre. thank you in advance.

Chuck

We put approximately 300 lbs of "Pel" lime per acre. The pelletized lime is more concentrated. This was recommended by Ag guys.

Yes, there is a difference.  Ag lime is to raise the ph in the soil.  The lime around your barn to control flies or bacteria is household or hydrated lime.  Either will raise the ph.  Around the barn and feeders, i would use hydrated lime.

Are you guys using lime to balance the ph for growing or to kill stuff?? I'm fighting foot rot in a pen..my buck pen of course...can't get rid of it. was wondering if lime would help

Have had some issues with lumpy jaw. I've been told lime will help.

If your going to lime you need to put 3 tons per acer to do any good.

The first time we lime we put 3 tons per acer .

The second time we put 2 tons per acer.

Then 1 ton per acer every year .

You will be able to tell a difference it works

The way to know is to have a ph test ran. They are cheap and will tell you how much lime is needed. You can get a kit for soil samples from most feed stores. All ag universities also test soil samples.

Why are you guys liming pens? What is the reason? Is it to help with some illness are for growing ?

Does liming the pen help with any illness like foot rot or worms?

Headley, you said we would notice a difference. What would we notice a difference in.

Liming kills bacteria!!!! Bacteria = Dead Deer!!! DEER POOP  AND PEE ALOT WHICH GOES INTO THE SOIL  AND MAKES BACTERIA SO YOU LIME TO KILL THE BACTERIA!!!! GEEEZ Yall should know this!!!! We lime our pastures every year very heavy with pelletized lime right before a good rain in the spring. It also helps the grass grow. Deer don't eat lime its bad tasting to them it wont hurt them its natural....

I guess it was a stupid question but thanks to all that have answered. can't beleive I asked such a stupid question!!!!!!!!!

what was I thinking. We are not worthy of the knowledge we asked for.

Sorry guys lol it's not a stupid question it's something every one should know I like to use a lot of !!!!!!!

Deer cost a lot of money and a simple thing to do is liming your pens in the spring to cut down/kill bacteria I'm sorry I get crazy but nobody explains things on here I get frustrated lol

Hey guys its all good. I work in the Oilfield and believe me no question is a stupid question unless you choose not to ask it. LOL    the ones that ask will eventually find out the one that doesnt ask will remain stupid I guess.

I appreciate all the help I can get from these forums, The main reason I ask the question is because where I live we maintain a PH level of around 7.5. dont really know what PH level it takes to kill bacteria or if that is even the case,

Here goes another stupid question, Is it the PH level that kills the bacteria and if so what level would you want to maintain?

7.5 is neutral. That is where you want to be. I would still add lime around the feeders and waters. I would also do a soil sample in the pens annually. One other thing I do is pour some hydrated lime in low areas often. Especially in standing water pockets.
