We have had 2 of our tame deer die in the last month. No signs of injury and vet was shaking his head also. one was about 9 months old doe and the other was a 2 year old doe. they where keep in separate pens of about 2 acres each. the 2 yr old was in with one buck sawed off horns and 10 other does. the 9 month old was in a pin with 6 doe about the same age. The rest of the deer look nice and healthy and come up every day to get hand feed.

deer can have an infection and it can build inside and be unknown to the naked eye, especially in the winter with a heavy coat, it will eventually cause a deadly level of blood born infection that when it reaches a certain level causes the deer to show symptoms and go down hill fast, usually at this point it is a futile struggle to save them as their metabolism fights against you in the winter not letting the antibiotics do their job.

I am in nw Florida, Today I had a very nice buck brake his back leg in the joint. should I put him down or let him alone?

it appeares to be a closed brake bt it flops around when he walks. I forgot to say it was his back leg.

sounds like one of those that will not be "let"to heal

and will eventually become open and infected then I will much harder to deal with

can you post a pic?

if you can tranq. him a vet can remove the broken leg and sew the hide and they can get along quite well,

My doe broke her right hind leg above the hock in October, and it has healed on its own quite well. We applied two splints and removed them after the 3rd week. She stands on her hind legs now. She had a complete spiral fracture of her tibia (it was dangling). Let a vet see it, try to splint it if you can, and allow a callous to form, if possible. If you are not sure that the joint is affected, you need exrays to diagnose. Good luck.

Sorry it took me so long to respond 2 days later I put him down. I had to go out of town. Thanks for your info. I though about what his rack would look like next year and decited to put him down. He was 3 years old we gross scored him. He scored 1971/8 that was good for me. His father is 12 this year and the best he ever scored was 185. I have been deer farming for 11 years just for a hoby. I have sold most of his off springs. Maybe I will get with some of you guys and get me a big buck!!!
