New deer farmer. I have a fawn with a lump the size of tip of little finger. It was not there on the 19th at 9 AM feeding. It was there at 3 PM feeding. I thought a bee or bug sting. Cant see or feel anything on inside of mouth .It has gotten slightly larger in past 2 days. What should I do?

 Thanks Bill

probably a sting, it will bust open.  Myself I wouldn't give anything. You could give some la300 or nuflor if you want.

I would lance that. I highly doubt its a bug bite personally. I would give some medication as well.

We had one bottle baby show up about that quick.  I would have caught it quicker myself but was just recovering from shoulder replacement and was heavily sedated. Heck I was higher than a kit.  I was able to check stock and this fawn was pointed out to me yesterday.  We lanced the abscess and squeezed it out.  Then shot in some peroxide and penicillin mix and squeezed out and gave a shot of Nuflor.  I would expect a quick recovery.  We also gave a Fuso shot.

Also cleaned up all puss so as not to add more to the environment and burned it because it is a ground bacteria and that is why we get these things.

I'm a great believer in mineral checks so when we harvest or lose a deer we will get a liver sample and have it analyzed.

We also collect 21 poop samples from different animals and send them in for a complete worm identification to see if the wormers we use are leaving any resistant worm.

Both of these problems cause an immune system loss to your stock  which will allow disease to get in your animals.

Just got back from the vet with her. He don't think fuso or " lump jaw". Hes seen and treated for that before. He said wait a few days and see if it goes down. Shes very healthy and eating and poopin good. No fever and its just under skin ."nothing on inside or connection to jaw. He said it could be a poke from straw hay wire or possibly a sting. The women I get my goat milk from said the same. He said it would have to come to more of a head before he would lance it."probably just get blood the way it feels now".

Does your vet have experience with deer or cervidae? If not, I wouldnt put to much faith in the diagnosis... I also agree with Ryan and Lance it to see what comes out. I would hate to wait a few days... when it comes to deer, especially fawns, an hour or 2 could be life or death.. Lance it and see what comes out. Should be drained.

a "poke" or small cut is how Fuso gets in the system. I'm with others..it looks like fuso. Treat it with Draxxin...today.

My vet is good and I used to have the same thing on my deer a lot   He said it was Fuso and we used an antibotic and then vaccinated all deer with fusoguard and out problem has almost vanished!    JIM

The two I had one that looked just like yours that I lanced was down the next day with just scar tissue left.  The other went down to nothing by the next day.  We gave another shot of Nuflor yesterday so have it under control.  Far as I'm concerned Draxxin and Nuflor are the only good treatments for Fuso but I prefer Nuflor as I think it works faster but Draxxin will last longer so it's a toss up.  As my fawns are bottle fawns I went with Nuflor.

Thanks for all your help. Gave 1/2 cc draxxin and then half dose 6 days later. The lump broke on its own the day after the first shot. Its almost down to nothing now.
