I need some help i have a doe that has a tennis ball size lump under her jaw, not on the side but directly under the bottom of her jaw. She acts fine, i have not seen her eat but i have noticed her at the water tang quit often. Please help me with your opinion of what to do and what the heck is it??????????

I agree with Robert and those things always look worse than they apparently are since the deer don't seem to be bothered by them. Once it gets big enough, it will pop and drain and everything should be fine. The only precaution I would bring up is the possibility of flies getting into it once it has burst. You should watch for that and apply some long lasting fly repellant if it happens.

If its an absess, cut a 1/4 inch hole and drain it . Get a box of wipes....they come in handy.Get all the pus out and use a big syringe with Hydrogen Peroxide and fill it and drain it..... several times. We usally stitch them up and a little Neosporin Ointment and they are ready to go.They sell the suture needles with string at www.enasco.com (Item # C12644n) $4.50 a piece. They come in handy a lot !!!

If an absess is not the case, it could be food impaction, Clean it with Hydrogen Peroxide ...till its clean, some heal on thier own. Good Luck !!!

Nate, I have had that same thing a couple of times. I did exactly what Mira Vista said to do,except I didnt sew up the incision. Be sure to make the incision where it can drain by gravity while she heals. If I was going to drain it I would do it asap before flys get too bad.Be sure to flush it with peroxide and give her good antibiotics while you have her down. this sounds like bottle jaw not lump jaw if if contains semi clear fliud not heavy infection,

the clear liquid will look after itself, if it's lump jaw and breaks and drains internally...big trouble if the bacteria metastasizes in the lungs .... drain, flush with betadine (not peroxide because the peroxide will cause more damage "cleaning" the wound and it will take longer to heal) and draxxin

An absess should have a drainage hole in it and not be stitched up as there is a good chance it will fill again. Absess heal from the inside out when the pus is drained. A 1/4 hole is nothing for the animal to heal on it's own.

If it is bottle jaw which as I understand is caused from worms you should just Ivermic the deer. One thing I always do when testing these lumps is use a large gauge needle and try to suck out some fluid. If it is clear I do nothing but give Draxxin and worm. If it is blood like or pus I cut a hole in the bottom of the absess so it will drain. Draxxin is a good choice.

I just had a yearling with the same thing and it ruptured on its own before I could knock him down. I wormed all the bucks with safeguard pellets in their feed. Does safeguard treat the worms that cause bottle jaw? He looks good now and all the swelling is gone. I just want to make sure I don't need to do more. Like always he has the best growth so far of all the yearlings!
