Lumps on the upper necks of my bucks .. They are just starting there new antlers..what are they?

I know a guy whose buck shed its antlers last Wednesday then developed a large lump on the right side of its neck. He called me and ask for advice. I told him let it go for now if it's not affecting the animals health. I am also curious if anyone knows about this.
Thanks for your quick response. Tried to send picture of buck. Not sure if successful. This happened last year; still trying to find what causes the lumps.
