Here is a bit of the DNR press release. Note that MS. Humphries has tendered her resignation, but still wants to stir the pot. :(

Dec. 10, 2010

Department of Natural Resources and Environment Director Rebecca Humphries has signed an order to make feral swine and wild boar an invasive species in Michigan. Humphries gave the order an effective date of July 8, 2011, giving the state Legislature time to enact laws to provide regulations for facilities that currently provide wild boar breeding and hunting. If legislation is not passed to regulate the facilities, the invasive species order will go in to effect, making it illegal to possess wild boar in Michigan.

The feral swine are a massive problem in States where they have taken over habitat that could be used for deer and wildlife. I for one see no problem with protecting our wildlife and farms from these feral swine. I'm sorry for those people who have invested in raising them but you have to admit they are a big problem. It is not possible to control them when they have a wild breeding population. Just my opinion.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this order - Michigan is getting a new governor in a few weeks and along with that will be new department heads and new folks in the legislature.

A republican governor in Michigan - should be a positive thing!!

I agree with Jack. If any of you have been down to any of the states where wild hogs can breed year round, you know how prolific their reproductive habits can be. With this you also know how destructive a large group of hogs can be. I have seen several places in Texas where perfectly good deer habitat has been wrecked by hogs. Making it illegal to own these animals in captivity does hurt many people if it is put in place. What about the entire natural habitat we have in MI that could so easily be wrecked.

At work I'm producing about 26 PSY (pigs/sow/year) right now, hate to imagine what they could do to a piece of property! I haven't seen pigs where I live, but I understand they are moving north all the time...have a friend in GA who is taking a 55-gallon barrel, cutting a hole in both ends, but opposite in position (one on top, one on bottom when lying on its side) and filling it with shelled corn. He says they can stand in a spot during the daylight and listen for barrels rolling around-the pigs learn to roll the barrels to get corn, then they go after them. Don't know how well it works, but it is his advice...

Hunting is hunting whether it is boars or whitetail. If they eliminate boar hunting whitetail may be on the next agenda. Another thing to consider. A large percentage of our whitetail hunters hunted boars behind high fence after seeing the big bucks they kept coming back. So what I am saying, to an extent wild boars and exotics are the stepping stone to getting hunters to hunt high fence whitetails.

Lets all go kill a pig and help solve the problem

Wisdom,

I have to agree. I was just waiting for someone else to say it first. Hunters need to stick together, whether it be ducks, bucks, hogs, rabbits, squirrel, etc. When one falls, they then go after the next weakest link until they get everything. I am from Michigan and do not support this decision. I dont support removing any type of hunting whether it be behind high fence or not.

By the way, the most fun I have EVER had hunting was for hogs. If we had wild hogs here, I would even give up my deer hunting to do that all the time.

Loved you post, it made me laugh. Please keep on posting. Yes you are so right we need to stick together. Hog hunting is a blast you have a lot of fun, get lots of meat and do not spend much.

It is one of the most thrilling things I have ever done with my clothes on.

I live and hunt in Pa. the wild deer population is down at the hands of hunters with the blessings of the DCNR & the PGC. "if" there were truly a huntable population of wild free range hogs here their numbers too would be held in check by hunters whom just want to have something to hunt.

In Pa there really isn't any big game animal left in large numbers like the whitetails used to be. Do hogs damage the habitat??? Surely they do but no more than bulldozers whom eat up the agriculture land daily for home or the new meance GAS COMPANIES whom tear open 5-10 acre tank plots and 5-10 acre well pads along with the access roads, etc. and no one is passing laws to slow them down or eliminate them from doing it....think about it one gas well takes a min. of 7 acres of habitat and add in the access roads and the road improvements to get to the acess roads, then don't forget the gas pipelines that must be dug to transport the gas...etc.etc... and some idiots are fretting over hogs.... God Bless them they must be politicans!!!!!

Everything you said about whats going on here in Pa is true Washington!!! Trap some of them hogs and bring um her... I guarantee they will not get a chance to reproduce... Oh but the the same game commission that has ruined our great deer hunting wont allow it!!! Go figure...

I started this post to get opinions on this topic, so I suppose I should give my own. Clearly no one wants to see the natural habitat in our state torn up by feral hogs. Likewise no one wants our pork industry jeopardized by disease from feral hogs. Declaring Russian Boars an invasive species and closing our hunting preserves is simply another attack on our private property rights by an anti-high fence agency (Michigan’s DNR). This is being done as a tactic to pressure the hog hunting facilities into unfair, costly regulations that would make the business unsustainable in our state. It is my opinion that the hog hunting facilities should have been regulated with fair common sense requirements some time ago. The fact is that our DNR lacked the foresight to do what was right and would prefer to declare a hog crisis in the press now. They have claimed to the press that we have 4,000 Russian Boars feral in this state, and point the finger only at hunting preserves this is an obvious lie as we only have about 7,000 Russian type boars behind the fence in the state total ! On the other hand hobby farmers have hundreds of thousands of hogs with no fencing requirements, or disease testing going on. As near as I can tell no state has pure bred Russian boars as a feral hog problem they are all hybrid type pigs. To ignore hobby farm pigs and outlaw Russian boars is simply prejudicial, and will not address a feral hog problem. Common sense regulation of both types will. I am not even convinced that Michigan has now or ever will have a problem with feral hogs. Michigan has a different climate, different terrain and a totally different population to acre of land ratio than any state where feral hags are a problem. The one thing our DNR did somewhat right is to allow hunters to shoot any hog they see, if there was going to be a hog problem in this state that would take care of it. To me our DNR’s way of creating a false crises to slam our industry is not acceptable. They play games to advance their agenda which is to be rid of any high fence in Michigan. If we are for private property rights then lets be for them all the time. How can we help hunting preserves ?? We can stand together strongly whenever wherever our rights are unfairly threatened.

Mi Bucks I dont think anyone on these forums could of said it better then you just did!!!!

Great points!!! Pure russian boar as Im told only have one or two offspring so this problem has to be due to hybridization with feral hogs!! Thanks
