We are feeding half & half, goat milk & replacement, this year again. We have been using Fox Valley for the last 3 years and Zoo Logic prior to that. What do you feed, and why? Pros & Cons

Traci:

We are a new farm that started in April 2009, we had 4 fawns last year & we started out with Superior Milk Replacer & had some issues (whether it was milk replacer or not) had lots scours - ended up with Fox Valley had no problems. Going with Fox Valley again.

Take a look at the post about "RED CAP" milk in the other forum. Not saying it is any better nor is Rick Browning, but it works good for some of us. It is a very reasonably priced way to feed fawns as well.

Traci - we will be sticking with our Nubian milk this year again. I can't say enough good things about it!

Traci,

Look under Vendors and Buyers Sales Barn for New Fawn Milk Replacer. Contact info available.

We too are useing Nubian goats milk and are haveing great results. For the past three years we used Fox Valley and had great results with it too. So far this year, I have 10 fawns on the bottle and all are doing very good. The pros of the goats milk for us are not haveing to mix, very easy to use and our lady with the goats lives 3 miles away. Her goats are tested and certified yearly and are all star milkers. As for any cons. Haven't had any yet

After I posted asking about red cap milk and heard what others had to say about it I decided to go with it this year. My first fawn's came 5 days ago and have been on red cap milk and so far so good, I couldnt ask for them to be doing any better. I used a good replacer last year and had trouble with scours and even lost a good fawn. May have been the tap water that caused my trouble. I like the fact that I dont have to mix powder and the bottles clean up fast and easy. I am feeding the fawns a higher volume each feeding than I did with milk replacer.

Just remember that you also need to mix a half cup or so of good milk replacer with the red cap milk and you will have no problems!!This is our first also and been using ultra 24 milk replacer with our red cap and using browning whitetails feeding program and they are as happy as can be!!!

We are using goats milk this year and wanted to know if anyone else is and how many ounces do you feed them for each feeding and how often you do the feedings.

Last year we used the red cap milk and the fawns did pretty good. So far this year, the fawns seem to like the goats milk better. We get the milk from a local farmer.

We just don't want to overfeed them.:)

You need to be very careful with the goats milk as it can cause some problems with the fawns. It needs to be very clean or the fawns will get a muscle problem and they will die!I think you would be safe to feed the same amount of goats milk as you would milk replacer.Did you have problems with the red cap milk??I just think red cap is pretty much fool proof and goats milk or milk replacer could give you different problems!!

We really did not have any problems with the redcap. My husband had heard that a lot of people were using goats milk and that it was closer to being like their mother's milk so he wanted to try it this year. We are still pretty new at this. Year before last we used the powdered milk.

You don't need to mix replacer.... if you feed ALL THEY WANT!!

I DO NOT use replacer...

It cost more to go all red cap...But It is what I feel is the best!!

I FEEL you defeat most of the reasons to feed red cap if you mix it...

We are feeding goats milk and our schedule is: Up to 1 week: 3-4 ounces 4 times a day

1-2 weeks: 4-6 ounces 4 times a day 2-3 weeks: 6-8 ounces 4 times a day 3-4 weeks: 8-10 ounces 3 times a day 4-8 weeks: 10-24 ounces 3 times a day 8-10 weeks: 24-32 ounces 2times a day 10-12 weeks: 32 ounces one time a day untils weaned

If you google goats milk compared to cow milk you will find it is better in many if not all the essential componates needed for healthy fawns. You DO need to find a goat herd that is clean(even CERTIFIED), tested and checked regular for any harmful pathagens. Also, we pastuerize the goats milk. I'm sure there are many others that have a better system. Just stateing what is working very well for us.

Billie jo,Is it not true that there is some vitamins missing if you just use straight red cap? I believe rick browning says that there is something missing if you ont use some replacer with it.but im not sure!!!Mine are ten days old and will only drink like 9 or 10 ounces of red cap but i do mix with half a cup of ultra 24 to a gallon of milk.

I feel they are bigger and healthier than ever on straight red cap!!!

Fawns pulled on the 22nd are getting 20 ounces at a time...They do great!!

They Run and play after eating they are not bloated...They look better!!

I am not looking for a fight...But I didn't lose a fawn or a deer Raised on ALL red cap yet!!!

I will post pictures of my bucks from last year soon!!

Like I said...I don't sell red cap and don't care what people do with their deer...

I just share what is best for me!!

Best of luck to everyone For a GREAT fawn season... ;)
