Hello everyone
I am Paul from North Florida. I am thinking about getting into deer farming and I am researching everything I can think of. With it being completely new to me I am unable to know if I have covered all the bases. I live in Suwannee county Florida and was told today by one of our extension office employees that Suwannee county has the highest concentration if deer farm's than any other county in the state. So my first question would be, can anyone tell how saturated the market is in this industry and how our borders being closed effects the market.

The market is flooded with deer farms. Everyone one and there brother wants to be Deer farmers and when they know nothing about it and realize how hard it is to make it they sell everything for penny’s on the dollar and drive the market into the ground. That’s the way I feel about it. Just my option. Would I do something else if I had the chance? Yes I would and I’m thinking really hard about it but I hope I’m on the tail end of my hard years and hope to see a return on investment in the next year. Wishful thinking maybe idk.

I'm in my third year of managing a herd, so I do not know near as much as a lot of people. That being said, here in Alabama (closed border state) there are new deer farms popping up everywhere. The biggest hurt to our market are the few bigger farms in the state. They pretty much just trade deer between themselves and just say a price. An astronomically high price. All that does is makes their herds look "better". In my first few years I have come to find out that most of the small farmers raise better quality deer. Overall if you don't screw anybody in the business you will be fine. Be honest with people about genetics and don't try to sell something you don't have. Also, find the oldest deer farmer in your state and talk to them about deer for as long as they can talk.
