I'll try to give all the info I can. Got a 1 week old that was pulled at 24 hours. She started drinking and was doing pretty well. My partner was caring for her and he called and said she was being covered with flies. Big green ones and they were laying eggs all over her. he cleaned her up and still was good. Next she had worms coming out her butt so he gave her 1/4cc ivomec plus. Next day big load of dead worms come out. Still getting covered with flies. Still eating good. Over night didn't eat so well and wouldn't eat all next day. Was covered in flies so bad thought she was dead. Larva just matted all over!! I went there and he had washed her all of but she is very weak and can't stand. I dry her and warm her and she eats about 4 oz. Put her inside and over night she doesn't get any better. I snatch her up and get to emergency nursing. Got her drinking but now she has scours bad. I took her to the vet and she gave her an IV most of the afternoon. Ate about 3 oz at 5:30. Brought her home and she ate 4 oz. at 8:00 but stopped and looked very weak. Liquid just running out of her backside. 2:00 am wouldn't eat. 6:00am took about 1 oz but could hardly stand. Have been feeding her with a syringe 3ml at a squirt. Using Biosponge to stop scours. (worked on another one in 1 day) Gave her ringers SQ about 20cc along with some kero in her mouth. She seems alert somewhat and drinks from the syringe somewhat but just will not suck the nipple. I am going back to the vet after noon time I think for another IV. Any suggestion on a course of action. If she would just keep drinking when she starts I think she would come around. She looked pretty good last night but is thin and weak. The liquid just keeps comming out of her and she is not taking that much back in. Help!

Any time a fawns temp. is off high or low you will get flies and eggs... If you see that there is already bigger problems.

I would definently get some probiotics in her pretty quick, I'd say it doesnt really matter what kind at this point just the best you can find on short notice. and deal with the flies before she goes back out.

The other thing to do for flies if one has stool that may stick to it... wipe swat on their butt or legs where it sticks.... to keep flies from laying eggs on that.

I just went through the same thing our fawn is at the vet now she is doing better but they monitered her all night and adjusted as they needed but she turned around overnight i hope all works out for you

Just got back from vet. Flies are no longer an issue as I keep her inside. She is pretty dehydrated and she has me giving her 25cc ringers SQ 4-5 times a day. Also 1/2 cc flaygal (?) once a day for five days. She wags her tail and is alert but very very weak. Jelly legged and falling down. She still tries to nibble grass and lick dirt but has no power to go. She bumps my armpit and squeaks like she is hungry but positively will not drink. Can't understand it. She drank like a wolf a few days ago, now it seems like she forgot how. I've gotten 2 different kinds of nipples but she just holds them in her mouth and will not drink. I've been forced to squirting some pedialyte/milk in her mouth with a syringe. At least she's swallowing some of it. Man is she thin. If I knew how to tube her I would try that next. Man what an ordeal!!! After all this I hope she makes it.

I'm a bit confused as why so many use pedialyte for an electrolyte when your fawns have scours . Wouldn't a gelling electrolyte be better or does pedialyte have a gelling agent in it ? If you can get a gelling agent in the fawns as soon as you notice scours they almost have to tighten up right away then you take away the dehydration factor which is huge . Just a thought ..

Woody what is her temp? I was told that if the fawns temp is low they will lose the sucking action and need to be warmed up in order to get them sucking again.....a really good way to get their temp up quick is to run towels through your dryer as hot as it gets then keep wrapping her in the warm towels....keep relacing the towels and keep them nice and warm......see if this maybe gets her to start sucking again......you know you obviously need to keep her hydrated or her body will start shutting down......that fly thing she was going through sounds like a problem...I hope your other fawns are not experiencing the same.....I would get those darn flies under control as soon as possible.....good luck

Hey guys, I was reading the post about the flies. Try to find a product called Maxforce Fly granuals. It has bitrex in it so that non target animals will not eat it but it will kill flies in 60 seconds for them eating it. It is a great product. I have used it around my feeders with the deer present, but I don't recommend anyone trying. Use it at your own risk!!!!!!!!! Woody, good luck with the fawn.

I got a few rules I always follow.

1. A crying fawn in the pen is a dying fawn and I always take it and make it into a bottle baby.

2. Any scours will draw flys and then this turns into maggots real fast from the fly eggs, this is a dead fawn walking. Scours for whatever reason need to be stopped and I use a gelling agent like Deliver to stop the scours and dehyderation. These fawns if on the mothers are removed to make bottle babies. These fawns are treated with meds and probitics for whatever they have. Either I use what has worked for me in the past or get new information from VEt.

For your animal I would tube it with Deliver to stop the fluid scours. My guess is your problem was started by the worms and your fawn also has coccidiosis. You should have a sample checked by your Vet for this and ecoli and salmonella and medicate from there.

I hope all turns out well. All we can do is try our best.

A lot of what is going on with this fawn sounds like perhaps she got no colostrom. Are you sure she did? If she has a temp, she needs antibiotics, if not maybe some electrolytes for a day. We have found that Spec-Tam is very good at stopping the diarrhia. The great thing about it is that it comes in a pump bottle and is easy to administer and doesn't taste bad which promotes swallowing. It can be given straight or in the bottle with milk or electolytes.

Dr. Favaro said there have been a lot of scour problems this year. He recommended going back to first milk (colostrum) at the first site of scours for a few days. He says that will slow or stop the scours fast. Try it if you are able to get some goat colostrum from a friend or neighbor.

Woody, try thiamine down the gullet it sounds like she may have what we call the stupids! ZZ

ZZ what are the "stupids". I have had a few fawns that went through the same thing, most of them came to me dehydrated with diarrhea and flies. I was never able to turn them around... Thank you.

Sorry, this may be off topic, but Jack.... thank you for saying that. When I read that it reminded me of a dear, deer friend whom passed away a few years ago named Dan McKetta. That is what Dan would always tell me about the crying babies in a pen - almost word for word.

I just wanted to say thank you for the reminder and also for sparking an almost forgotten thought of him.

Liz, when a fawn is eating and you think every thing is going good then they start mouthing the nipple and act like they want it but have forgotten how to suck and you can't figure out anything that is wrong we go with thiamine. That my freind is the STUPIDS. In that case would also keep some clavamox on hand in case you need a low grade antibiotic. It isn't all that hot. Vets version of amoxcicilion(sp) for kids. Also you can put in milk! ZZ

Here's the update. After another trip to vet for more IV she started looking better. Stool sample clean, temp normal. Just wouldn't eat. Kept her at work with me cuz I was giving her 25cc ringers SQ 4-5 times a day. All at once she started squeaking and even walked over to me. Well talk about some high steppin', I whipped a bottle up quick and she slammed 6 oz like a champ. Ate good at every feeding last night but still scours bad. I tried to give her Biosponge this morning to dry her up, it worked great on my other one in one day. She doesn't like the taste and won't take it. Tried for two feedings but no go. Just fed her milk and she hammered it. Gonna try the iodine thing next.

Can't seem to catch a break though:mad: as now from last night, one of my other week old fawns just slowed down and stopped eating. Comes out and acts hungry but just holds the nipple and won't suck. Like you said, like she forgot. I got about 3 oz in her total in the last 3 feedings. At first I thought she wasn't that hungry, since she does nibble grass and eats grape leaves, dirt and some small niblets of whole wheat bread. But now she is looking a bit thin. Where would I find some thiamine? Also how much do you give? Man, I'm that far down at the end of my rope I don't even have enough extra to hang myself with if I wanted to. Someone should have kicked me in the crotch when I decided to go partners in a deer farm. LOL! Just seems like one problem after the next. Get one on the rebound and another goes south. Get that on started over the hump and a good healthy one just up and stops sucking. Yesterday morning she looked like Ben on a brand new $100 but now she's looking thin. Just can't seem to get where there isn't SOME kind of headache. Anyway, I'm thankful for a site like this to get help from people who have been down that road already and know what it feels like. I want to thank everyone for all the suggestions on the problems. Armed with your advice and backing, I can find the strength to keep on plugging.

Woody go to the vet and get a bottle of thiamine and a bottle of clavamox. Give 1cc 3-4 times a day of the thiamine. 1cc clavamox for first treatment then 1/2 cc 12 hrs. later. Then go 1/2 cc twice a day for 5 days. You can put in milk as long as they are finishing bottle. Both drugs can be given orally. Should see improvement with in 24 hrs. Don't like to give out dosages on forum, just saying that's what this old "FADING" man would do! ZZ

ZZ, just curious. If the fawn wouldn't take it orally do you give the same doses SQ? Rick
