I just picked up a baby buck that his mother got hit by a car. He looks to be only a few days old. Have had him for a few days and is doing great. I have been feeding 2-3 oz of goat milk 6 times a day. Is this the right amount or should i be feeding more? He usually acts like he wants more and has also pooped 3 times a day a has only urinated once. Should he be urinating more? Should I be feeding any water? Any advice would be greatly appriciated Thanks!

He should be urinating more than just once. I am still new at this but ours always urinate more then they usually poop.

We usually make ours pee everytime we feed until we notice them doing it all by themselfs(as evident when cheking out their bedding). Then they will still come up eventually to be stimulated occasionally. We usually make them go #2 at least once a day. Usually by the time they are 2 or 3 weeks old everybody is doing on their own. Are you stimulating your fawn to go to the bathroom? You can put water out. They may drink some but mine usually don't take to water untill they get several weeks old. But you should definately put out some freash dirt for him to eat. Keep it fresh and from an area where you haven't sprayed for bugs or weeds. The dirt will get the bacteria into is gut and will aid in digestion. Rick

yes i am stimulating him to go to the bathroom he poops everytime i try and has also been urinating. i purchased some probiotic powder for goats. i also bought a tube of "durvet lamb and kid paste" it syas it has live microorganisms to help digest food.. should i feed these and how much? He will also drink straight water from a bottle.. is this ok? Thanks

I use a probiotic paste to get them started but then switch to dirt. If you take a shovel and skim a few inches deep of sod and then turn it over grass side down you can get them not only to eat the dirt but they get started on eating plants as they will eat roots from the sod. If you are feeding probiotics you may not need to worry about the dirt. Its just what has worked for us. The fawns seem to think its a treat to as they really enjoy it when its fresh dug. We have also fed water out of the bottle and doesn't seem to be a problem however we don't let them have too much as we try not to fill them up to much. Don't want them blowed up and sloshing around. After about a week we start feeding them hand picked clover, greens, and leaves. We keep them in a building for a week or so but then let them start going out into their pen. Once they have imprinted you as their provider you can let them have some more space to roam as they will come running to you. As far as the amount of probiotic to feed my paste says 2 to 5cc. Yours should have an adult dose and a newborn on your tube. We usually fill up a 3cc syringe and stick it into the back corner of the mouth and squirt it in slowly. Rick

Stick to just the milk no water in the bottle. Water can be in a dish. You can teach them to drink by using the nipple and the water dish. Get him wanting the nipple and manipulate around to get him drinking the water through the nipple out of the dish. After a few times of this he will drink water from the dish on his own.

When he peeps is it dark yellow and smell strong. If so he is dehydrated.

I don't think your feeding enough milk. You don't need to feed 6 times per day either. You can cut that back to 4 times to start and try feeding 6 to 8 oz per feeding. See how he does on that amount and adjust from there. Keep his body size and approx age in mind for feeding amounts.

All that said is what you are doing legal in your state? This is a big deal in many states so beware.

he is doing great and is getting a lot of energy....just weighed him and he is 6 pounds...how many oz. total of goat milk would be OK? thanks

10 to 20% of body weight in milk per day...6lbsx16oz=96 oz in body weight. he should get 10 to 20 oz milk per day and increase accordingly.
