Hey everyone, first time posting on this forum. Anyways, my brother and I are in the planning stages of starting our own whitetail farm and are loaded with questions.

First off, after some research I have seen a lot of people keeping their average pen size at 100ft x 300ft, but what is the maximum capacity for a pen like this?

Any tips, advice, or helpful links would be awesome!

Thanks!

Much like cattle. If you plan to supplement their feed and can rotate pastures so that the mud hole can reestablish after being run down to nothing then fill it with as many as you'd like. Your states Board of Animal Health is a great resource. Animal husbandry is important with any livestock you raise. 10-15 deer per acre would be a good number to start and evaluate your farms conditions after a season.

Where in PA are you located? I like to stay away from the 10 per acre. But I hate seeing mud. I honestly think 10 is at the very top of the range when trying to keep good pens. I would advise you to make multiple small pens rather than one large pen. More pens and more alley ways makes for better handling and easier sorting.

I am in the Greensburg area currently, and am planning on staying in the western part of the state, so mud will be a factor to consider.

I want to begin visiting actual deer farms in the area and seeing some of the different setups first hand. So if anyone would be kind enough to give a tour that would be awesome.

I am 1 1/2 hours from you and 2 of my friends are with in 15 minutes of me. We all 3 have deer and set ups if you want to visit. Wicked Whitetails is also with in about 40 minutes of me. I am near East Liverpool, Ohio. I sent you a private message.

Looking to start raising deer here in alabama where doi need to start ? How do you get thepermit to raise deer ? I know there is an application but who and where do I talk to for all the specifics . How much land is needed , pens , etc . Anyone around that is willing to give a walk through of their place to see how things are done ?

My suggestion is to find farmers local to your area and start talking / asking questions. Make visits to their farms. Talk to a lot of them, not just one. Get a feel for who you think has your best interest at heart. You will need them later.

The Alabama Deer Association (ADA) has a list of farmers you can use. Look em up.
