Here is a comparison of the New Zealand and Canadian Cervid Industries.
Deer Industry New Zealand Production Manager Tony Pearse was recently invited to provide an update to the banking community in NZ, refreshing them on the value and prospects for the Deer Industry in NZ. His report is summarised in the February 2012 issue of Country Wide magazine, which now includes The Deer Farmer.
I’ve added Canadian numbers for 2011 and converted all $ amounts to Canadian (CAD = USD) for easier comparison:
NZ: 3000 active Farmers (down from 5200 in 2002)
CDN: 1000 active Farmers (down from 2500 in 2002)
Note: in both NZ and Canada, indications are that industry contraction has ceased, and modest expansion is apparent.
NZ: 1,200,000 head of livestock – mostly Red Deer
CDN: 70,000 head – 55% are Elk, 25% Red Deer, 15% Whitetails, 5% other
NZ: 600 head average herd (farm) size
CDN: 60 head average herd (farm) size
NZ: $218 million gross returns to farmers ($178 M venison, $27 M velvet, $13 co- products)
CDN: $25 million gross returns to farmers ($11 M meat, $6 M velvet, $8 M trophy)
NZ: Germany is the most important buyer for venison at 37% of sales, US at 7%
CDN: USA is single largest buyer
NZ: Venison price paid to farmer - average $6.60 per kg HCW
CDN: Venison (QC Red Deer) - average $11.00 per kg HCW, Elk average $7.20 per kg HCW
NZ: Velvet antler price paid to farmer - average: $76 per kg at collection center, frozen antler
CDN: Velvet antler price paid to farmer - average $57 per kg at collection center, frozen antler
NZ: Taiwan, South Korea and China are the strongest buyers of NZ velvet antler for processing
CDN: Hong Kong and China are the strongest buyers of CDN velvet antler for processing
NZ: Largest winning velvet antler at Competition was 25.5 kg
CDN: Largest winning velvet antler at Competition was 29.4 kg – on farm, a 3 year old cut 30 kg.
