Has anyone else ever seen this? She is about two weeks old and appears to have been born missing one eye.

That is odd.....I have not a clue........could it be due to heavy interbreeding....I know you got her from the wild. Just a guess....have not a clue.....poor little girl....well at least she has her other eye.

Is it possible a buzzard got a hold of her? I know in Texas I've heard of that happening.

I suppose it is possible... I am pretty sure though that she was just born without it. I see no trauma or swelling or anything to indicate it was ripped out. I have never seen anything like it...

I have heard of a case on another farm up here, didn't see the deer or any pics, it was put down soon after birth as it had NO eyes, birth defects happen in a certain percentage of births this one's number must have been up. I am assuming that since you are a rehabilitator this was a wild deer.

From the pics you emailed to me, it is evident the eye was never there. It is a congenital defect and the other eye shows signs of a problem as well. Give B1 (Thiamin) for 3-4 days (1/2 to 1 cc per day subQ) until eyes begin to clear. If eyes do begin to clear, give 1cc antibiotic or Pen G (IM) and 1cc B12 complex (SQ)as a follow up. My guess is that the other eye will never clear up, but on occasion the above mentioned treatment has done wonders. Good Luck

A friend of mine has a deer that was born with both eyes missing. The buck is about 3 yrs old now. A friend of his gave it to him--really to his daughter. He is doing fine with not being able to see. Never guess what they named him (20/20) He does grow antlers but just spikes. Which are cut off every year. He knows his way around his special pen and knows when someone is around too. He is not used for breeding he is just my friends pet. And no there was no linebreeding or interbreeding as some people call it. They checked that right away. In the over of 10 yrs this farmer has been raising deer have never had one born this way. Like I said I believe the fawn is about 3 and the deer farmer has not had one born this way since.
