No Replacement!!!

Just want to make the following statements.

There is no replacement for the value of empirical knowledge...knowledge based on personal experience.

There is no website, book, or ''here-say'' that can compete with the ''hands on in the field knowledge'' and the accuracy thereof, especially when it comes to something as unorthodox as the care of whitetail deer.

Can websites, books, and ''here-say'' be helpful?...Of course they can!

I'm just saying that it can't replace ''specific'' empirical knowledge that has been accumulated for a significant amount of time.

Personally, I view this forum to glean everyone's ''hands on in the field experience''. Chances are, all of you do as well...I mean, we all know how to google right?...So why would we post a question on here if we're not looking for advice from experience?

I can assure you that if I post advice, it will be from experience...something that I KNOW that has or has not worked for me before. It certainly doesn't mean it's gonna be the best thing to do or not to do...only what has worked or not worked for me before...from MY experience!

And if it should happen to be something I've heard or read, and not hands on experience, I will state just that. BUT...I would only offer up such info after I yielded to all possibilities of empirical knowledge coming forth.

Am I saying here that no one on here should ever refer someone to a website, book, or repeat something they've heard...no!

I'm saying there is ''no replacement'' for empirical knowledge!

Just sayin... :)

Mark that is wonderful, could not have been laid out more simply put. What is the real difference between hopping in Google and asking "what type of antibiotics are used for pneumonia in whitetail deer", and having personally administered antibiotics to a deer and stating your opinion? It is simple, the answer on the internet might not be wrong, it may in fact be the same answer you were going to give with your personal experience. The experience that one personally has is invaluable.

Johnny B - Exactly...most to nearly all of the time internet info is spot on accurate to any given question as it pertains to how to treat a sick deer, but for that occassional time it isn't.....well, like you said, ''the experience that one personally has is invaluable'', which is what makes these forums so invaluable.

While experience is always a great way to learn, I think that for new folks entering into the industry a forum such as this is a valuable aspect that can not only allow them to gain knowledge but build relationships with more experienced members of the industry. I personally have learned so much about the industry by associating myself with a mentor who is not afraid to help guide me and prevent me from making foolish mistakes. Now I do not claim to be an expert on any given subject but I will say that I have no reservations recommending that new members of the industry search out a mentor that will take the time to share his or her knowledge. Knowledge is power regardless where you get an a smart bet is to use all the tools at your disposal.

Just my thoughts,

Chris
