How many straws can I expect to get when I draw my buck? He is two years old and this is the first time he's been drawn.

Jason,

I just asked this question the other day to a semen collection expert. They told me that a two year old should produce anywhere from 60 to 85 straws. They have seen as high as 126 I believe was the number.

They also stated the buck has to be free of any breeding activities for at least a week prior to the draw.

Hope this helps.

You can also end up with ZERO straws and a DEAD buck. I only mention this because people seem to over look those 2 little tid bits of info.

The number of straws also depends upon the QUALITY of semen and the number of cells packed per straw.

Jack, Good point in my opion most semen seems to be packed a "little" light on concentration! The higher the count the better the chances of conception. Another example of................ "Qaulity over Qauntity"

Earl Souva at Great lakes did my draw and it is packed at 50 millioin cells per 1/2 cc straw.Qaulity and Qauntity at Alabamas Finest we do it right.

I have heard of some people packing straws specifically for Lap AI, and only packing 4-5million/ straw. Has anyone else heard this? I completely understand why some one would do this. Your getting the semen right where it needs to be with Lap, so why use 10X more semen then you really need?
