Oklahoma man sentenced for poaching breeder buck
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A Newalla man will spend 10 days in jail and agreed to never hunt again as part of his sentence for poaching a tame white-tailed deer that was used for breeding.
Twenty-five-year-old Justin Ray McDaniel was sentenced Wednesday for shooting the buck “Pretty Boy” with a bow and arrow in 2008. He pleaded guilty in November to charges of grand larceny of exotic livestock and making a false statement at a hunter check station.
McDaniel said he shot the buck because he wanted to “sound like a cool guy.”
McDaniel must also pay $33,000 restitution to the owner and the breeder of the deer.
A prosecutor says the owner and breeder lost from $493,000 to $1.1 million in potential breeding income because of the deer’s death.
