Open areas behind eyes and ears

I've got a fawn that is very healthy except for having open areas behind her eyes and several spots on her ears. I've noticed that she scratches alot so it must itch. It might have started as bug bites. Any suggestions on what I could apply to solve this problem? I put polysporin on a few times to try to avoid an infection but it doesn't seem to help.

Thanks, Scott Manito, IL.

I don't have a lot of experience, but we have had luck keeping bugs off of these types of areas with a little vaseline. I have seen this used on horses to keep bugs off the skin on their inner ears, and I used it on my deer last summer when the bugs got bad. Maybe it soothes the itch a little too? I think there are also wound creams available that have fly repellant in them. Hope it helps.

I put hydrocortisone cream on last night. It seemed to have already started to work. Decreased redness and starting scab over.

Sometimes fawns get raised circular areas that fall off and leave pink open sores. This is caused by a fungus that is not real serious however can be spread and sometimes flies get in the open sore area. We have used an antifungal like Tinactin cream to clear it up quicker and stop spreading to other fawns. Rick

Being an RN, I've found that occasionally using an antifungal cream on an area that appears to be fungal and finding out that it's dermatitis, psoriasis or inflammation can cause increased swelling and irritation. That's my reasoning for using the hydrocortisone. My only concern was to avoid getting it in her eyes.
