Nuflor, telezol, xylazine, reversal, draxxin

BAM & Reversal (We look at that as a single solution), Baytril, Draxxin, Dexamethasone, Banamine.  There are others that are not necessarily medications, but for a wormer, we've started using Longrange.  We also recommend Pneu-Vac2, and Eco-Vac for vaccinations.  Always good to have some cheap Penicillin on hand and some C&D Antitoxin for fawns.

How about a checklist of sorts... maybe list a few medicines and what it is used for.. included how many ccs, where to inject, etc kinda like a cheat sheet. Anyone have one made up that they keep in their medicine box? Would be helpful to me (being new) and others also. Just a thought. Maybe make a new post just for that info???

Anyone that has had deer or any livestock for a good amount of time has found out the hard way that it is always best to have what you need on hand at all times. To limit one to having just a few injectables is ill advised. At the same time there is a push by some in the public to degrade our industry by saying we over use and abuse these injectables. With that said this may be a better discussion for another thread or certainly worth a call to an experienced deer vet.

There is much truth in what Josh said.  It's easy to feel like you are over medicating but it's really not so I hope no one succumbs to that argument.  There is a lot of reasons why it is necessary to medicate as we do from not having 100 acre pens with a dozen deer in them to vermin climbing in their feed and water and the simple face that everything is off label and deer metabolize medications faster than other livestock,


 


I have yet to see anything work with a single dose going by the label recommendations.  The only single dose that worked miracle for a doe dang near killed her because someone read the label wrong and gave her 10 times the dose.  I was livid over the mistake, but the doe was given Dex to combat the OD and has been doing great since the next day.  Having a place in the southern US the 2 most valuable medications by far were Compounded Dex and Lactated Ringers.  I firmly believe without the lactated Ringers I would have lost 80% of my deer to EHD. Beyond that I cannot say definitively what has done the most for me, Baytril, Draxxin, Resflor, Nuflor, Zactrin, Excede, Micotil, LA 300, Penicillin, B12, Bovi Serum are all handy just off the top of my head... Having a system and deer that you can run every day and doctor for a multi day treatment seem to be more important than the medication used. 


 


What I would like to know is how people feel about alternating medications and combining them. Personally I like the idea of a multi day treatment of one or two medications then be done with it.  Recently we had some fawns with a cough and runny noses. While I was away for work they were given something every 4 to 7 days and the cough would only go away a couple days and come back.  When I came home we ran them every day, gave them Baytril and Draxxin for 4 days on the 5th day we gave them Baytril and Micotil 300.  Any of the deer that got worked up were also given a single shot w Thiamine, B Complex, and Tryptophan. Last I was told they were all doing well.  My biggest button buck was also given a liter of fluids 2 days in a row then he started laying down in the tunnel so I just straddled him and gave shots every day (he had to be bottle fed so he's that docile and we kept him and another inside).

My 5 would be Bam/reversal, Nuflor, Baytril, Excede, Vitamins.


 


Nuflor is a great drug (broad spectrum). I use it for pneumonia, lumpy jaw, bone infections. It is used as follows 6cc/100lbs/SQ one time dose. Should not be used on pregnant does or bucks producing semen. If given IM should give 3cc/100lbs and then again after 48hrs.


 


Baytril is another broad spectrum antibiotic. Can be used to dart, my personal preference over draxxin. Good for treating pneumonia, wide range of infections. Very powerful stuff, don't use in young animals as it can cause joint issues down the road. Dosed at 2cc/100lbs 5-7day treatment or 5cc/100lbs single dose.


 


Excede yet another broad spectrum antibiotic. Good with tissue infections, velvet damage, respiratory disease. Dosed at 1cc/88lbs, I prefer to give in fatty tissue behind the ear can also be given IM in neck. Always draw back on syringe to insure you are not in a vein, can cause death. I also never like giving more than 2cc in one location.


 


Vitamins so many uses where to begin. Had great success this past season giving sedated deer Vitamin ADE, keeps them neurologically strong and all there and is a prevention to capture myopathy (5cc). I also always give my sedated deer Vitamin B for much of the same reasons (3cc).

It is just as important to giving to much as it is to give too little! A follow up of most all antibiotics 3-5 days after initial treatment will serve you well !!


 


There really is no one shot "Miracle Drug"  In My Opinion

Have you ever had a doe abort from using Nuflor?  I have used on many does that were bred with no issues.   Just lucky on my part maybe?

I have never had a doe abort, to my knowledge. If they obviously need it they are getting it in my opinion. Its my go to because I know it works. As far as bucks, I have seen in decrease semen quality no doubt.
