:mad:From what ive been researching on there's a weed that grows in our pens that could be fatal to our deer (not every deer but some).ive had several deer die over the past few yrs. that i didn't know what the cause was i thought it was ehd or some other disease but after reading up on this weed i think it was pigweed ive had them get bloat, foaming out of the mouth, nervousness trembling, stiff neck and legs, shaking all of these may be caused from high toxins in pig weed so please do some research for your self and for the health of your deer.you can start by googleing Pigweed poisoning stock diseases.and i must say again it may not be toxic to all deer but it is toxic..

same thing can happen if they over eat clover as well. there are alot of plants that will get nitrate buildup. ( I believe that is the culpret in the pig weed )

i have a fawn that i just treated for pneumonia but after reading this post i am wondering if it isn't pig weed poisoning. i have it in the pen my fawns are in and earlier today i pulled a fawn out the cage that is sweating and foaming at the mouth and shaking. is there any treatment that i can do? treated with baytril and excede. still drinking plenty and full of electrolytes. anything would be helpful. thanks

im not sure how to treat it but you can research nitrate poisoning to look for treatments that way sorry i couldnt help

ive lost a deer every day for the last 4 days and the only thing i can figure is pigweed. just got done weeding a few pens. didnt realize how much was out there until i started pulling them all. deer are showing exact same signs though. foaming, diarrea, shaking, and stiffness. hopefully it clears up soon.

To bad for the deer but cook like spinach and it is excellent . when it is young, and not tough .

positive its not EHD. vet took one apart and so did Purdue. both said no signs of EHD, which is some of a relief. when we took the one doe apart the only odd thing we could find was some small black seeds in the small intestine, and pigweed has a small black seed. so in all reality were just hoping its the pigweed. its a start for us and well take that for now.

It is not bad when it is young and others grasses and weeds are still around. The thing is it lives when other stuff dies and the deer eat to much of it. It becomes a deer killer. We need to feed lots of hay and keep the weed mowed down. Look up pigweed on the web lots of pics of it.
