I have a pregnant doe that has pneumonia--bad! I went out after work last night & she was breathing with her mouth open & had green liquid coming out of her nose. We got her into the barn & dried her off (rained last 2 days), then put electric heater by her. I gave her draxxin, banamine and vitamin B. The only way she can breathe is with her mouth open---couldn't even lay her head down last night because she couldn't breathe then. I stayed out in the barn with her all night in case she died so that we could try to save the fawns (X-Factor fawns, of course). But she is not eating or drinking anything either. Don't know what to do-----hope for a miracle that she will pull through or put her down & try to save the fawn. It is 182 days for her & so the lungs might not be developed enough---yet how long can fawns survive without any nutrition? Any suggestions???

Sheri,

That's a tough one. Draxxin takes about 24 hours to get concentration levels in the blood where they need to be. With severe cases as described I prefer Nuflour @ 6 cc's per 100 lbs, SQ. Good luck. It sounds like you did the right thing by bringing her inside in the dry space.

Nuflor would be first..get a bag of fluids in her by iv.. Check her temp also

Forgot to mention that I also gave her 5cc nuflor SQ last night----I've had very good luck with draxxin (IM) & nuflor (SQ) given at the same time. I cannot IV her (gets up on me) so I am doing lactating ringer SQ----that's a slow process that way, though.

Baytril is a great med to use for pneumonia.

He is very knowledgeable and a great guy too!

Try to keep her hydrated. You might try doing some "coupage" on her lungs (see: youtube.com for a video demonstration) to try to loosen up some of those fluids.

Good luck!

Well, happy beginnings and sad endings. My AI'd doe with pneumonia died this morning. We cut her open right away & both fawns were dead.... they were X-Factor fawns and we were so excited when we found out she took to the AI'ing. Not a good start to fawning season but I guess we just move on. Hopefully, brighter days are ahead!

Sheri, sorry to hear about your loss and yes better days will be coming. Just a note to look out for. A few years ago we lost a doe to pneumonia while we had the vet there she stopped breathing . The vet gave her chest compressions as I held her head up . her tongue was hanging out and I must have made contact and a few days later I came down with pneumonia. The doe died the next day.
