i have a doe that had twins in may and still looks poor. she's eating fine but is not putting on much weight and moves slowly. any advice

How soon are you planning to wean the fawns? She could just be pulled down from nursing now that they are so much bigger. Or, do you have a reason to suspect that an illness or infection is causing the weight loss? I have several that are nursing their own babies and letting other fawns occasionally steal milk, and it really takes a toll on them.

If you do not suspect any illness or condition, I would recommend Power Phat or pure rice bran as a suppliment to restore her body weight.

I agree with All, just another thought,I seen few thin does, Mainly one!!. i got one she stays thin in summer, been that way 4 yrs, she is only 4, one that cant handle too high protien, i have to drop, soon as you wean drop protien, Or NOW!, WORM,watch see. never used the rice bran, but sure feed lot Isle 4 corn oil (grocery).poured on feed Daily for awhile, and stired around till soaked, dont take much, they fatten up and shine for winter. and give extra energy, im suspecting worn down from fawns and feed, only my morning thought. the lower protien with some sweet feed such as baby beef should do if not she sick! good ole iron shot and good dose Vit B, sure wouldnt hurt, had another doe get gored through lungs, coupl yrs back now one lunger, air c,mon out side all winter, she survived with lot nuflor, looked like bones, when she did fawn, Bad, BAD, this worked for her also, i dropped protien just for this doe, now they so fat, and PG, but when still under investigation,:D Good to see you posting Keith,Or Boyd,?? < DC PS, little extra corn daily dont hurt dang thing either, BOL Deer are naturally thin in summer, but when one get down , real thin it takes couple months to get them Back so you gotta stick with it. Dc

thanks ya all. we pulled the fawns 2 days after birth and she never has recovered. some say just wait and she'll get better, but it doesn't look like it to me

Wait is what broke the wagon, i wait for nothing, get her wormed and on fattening up diet, she need it for winter and breeding, needs to be in shape, or may see single or couple small fawns, only my ways. Dc

Given that you pulled her fawns, has she continued to loose weight, or just not put any back on? Have you treated her with anything since fawning? Can you post a picture?

Where I am, this animal would be a "suspect" animal and I would be required to put her down and have her tested for CWD. I'm not saying that is an issue in your case.

Get the vet to the farm ASAP. It could be a number of things from subacute acidosis, Johne's to a number of other things. The deer needs immediate medical attention from a licenced vet, in my opinion.

Good luck,

John

Dang, little thin, She got Any teeth? May just be picking through, sick or not ,she needs seperated if possible, focus on her diet.just my thinking. i agree with scott and John,in mean time focus on diet, She is starving to death!!

I had one like this before and it could be she has some sort of internal infection especially since she has gone down hill since she has had the fawns.....she may have a uteral type of infection....I would get her loaded up with some antibiotics ASAP! Good Luck!

but she is eating and acting fine

White Oak,

With all due respect, if a deer (or any animal) is that emaciated it is not "acting" fine. Acting fine would include a doe drying up after the fawns were pulled and then an increase in weight gain and body condition. That would be acting fine, in my opinion. From the sounds of it, she has been going down hill and loosing weight and condition ever since she gave birth - this is not acting fine.

None the less, good luck and I wish you and your deer all the best.

John

Get her on fat up Diet! NOW! 2 months in my pen she be ok! unless cwd or no teeth, or some unknown ilness, which vet may never catch, (She is eating and acting fine,) I truly dont think this all come about since fawns it most likely gradual, and it gonna take coupl months, her maybe three, with right diet!! and good worming, just cause, and hopefully you can find if something is ailing her, dont wast no more Time. Only my thoughts. either way she skinny need fattening! sick or not. Sometimes while evaluating opinions you need try something, Ps. it is possible to starve while eating, i seen that, She looks like one i bout starved on purina, complete diet, I also heard of 5 that ate up till dead,Necrop results , Malnutrition, Dc

I to really curious, because if this started from since fawning,at that rate of loss shouldnt be but few days left, till skeleton,DC

I sent a message a couple of days ago and didn't get a resoponse.... I would be very suprised if the does condition isn't one of not cleaning properly after birth as suggested by Dennis. The fawns came in May so by the time she posted, 2 1/2 months or so had passed. A doe could go that far that fast in left untreated. If she didn't clean properly and she hasn't treated her with n antibiotic, she is dead. I suggested they load her up with 48 hour Penecillin asap and again in two days. And for future reference..... 1 1/2 cc of OXYTOCIN INJECTION Rx for any doe that you do not see clean good within 4-6 hours after birth.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that as it has saved a doe or two here.
