Preserve owner Question!

I have a question for the preserve owners.

What would the majority of your hunters shoot first?...the 10pt typ 17 inch wide or the 8pt typ 20 inch wide, with the mass and heigth the same on each buck.

We all know the width adds shock value but we need to consider the tine length mass and length of beams. We still have hunters tracking bucks this weekend with fresh snow on the ground. Posted are a few of the bucks shot last week at Apple Creek. We are getting to the end of our hunting season but the hunters are still thrilled. Soon we are can only dream of what will grow out this spring.

Scottt, who is the buck in your aviator. Thats the kind i would like to shoot.

Mark,

Are the score and price the same also? Let me know and I will give you an answer (Hopefully the short version) LOL! :)

Yes, the price is the same...mass is the same...beams are the same...tine heigth is the same...but no, the score will be the difference between the extra 2 tines, however long or short one wants to make them, let's just say average or so.

And maybe to make the question easier to answer, let's say the width difference will be 18 and 21. Cause 18 isn't narrow, and 21 isn't super wide.

I didn't want to make the spread to far...kinda just trying to find the line on when number of tines, in this case 10 as opposed to 8, outweighs the extra width.

Personally, for instance, all things the same except the number of tines, I would sooner shoot a 22 inch wide typ 6 pt over a 16 inch wide typ 12 pt...hands down. But I know many would sooner say ''I killed a 12 pt'' and it would kill them to say ''I killed a 6 pt''.

Ok, my response wasn't so short, no need for yours to be either. :)

If the 10 point had 5 inch g4s and all else was equal it would score 10 more inches than the 8 point. Given that, a majority of hunters... I'd say 7-8 in 10 would shoot the higher scoring buck. Plus there are a few that would rather shoot a 10 pointer.

If the g4s were only an inch or 2 I would think that they would be close enough in score to go exactly the opposite. In that case 7-8 in 10 would shoot the wider 8 point.

And like you pointed out, there are few who want 8 pointers and a few who want 10 pointers, so there are always a couple that would shoot either buck for that reason. :)

I saw on another thread that asked if 2 bucks were exactly equal in antler size would you shoot the buck with the bigger body or smaller body. It was interesting to see the answers.

I would answer that the hunter would like to shoot the one with the larger body but 9/10 times will shoot the one with the smaller body because the antlers look bigger. A lot of 2 year olds have been shot that had serious ground shrinkage. The smaller underdeveloped bodies just make the antlers look bigger. Its hard to get the Southern hunters to pull the trigger on those large northern deer because they simply don't believe the score you are telling them. Then you have to trick them into shooting LOL. I'll save that for another thread! :)

Not a preserve owner but if I was hunting a preserve and I see two deer about the same frame size one an 8pt one a 10pt I would shoot the buck with the better brow's be it the 8pt or the 10pt even if his score might be a few inch's less, just a sucker for long brow's.

Look at the photo above from Apple Creek, the brow's on that buck is what would make me want to shoot him.
