Today I was talking with a fellow deer farmer about fawns and death issues and he asked if I was using proboitics to feed my deer. Which I do at 24 hrs I gave Cervid Heath Products 2 cc fawn tube. My bottle feed I put 1/4 teaspoon once a day in his bottle. I have probiotics mixed in my feed ration. He had 47 bottle feed fawns and lost 30 of them to diarrhia. He took 3 of them to Michigan State University to have autopsied. He said the report was to much good bacteria in its digestive system. Just wondering what others think about this and your experince has been using probiotics? Another note he also said when he quit feeding probiotics the rest of them dried up and are pooping normal.

I have always heard that you can not have to much "good bacteria" thier are others on here that sell proboitics it would be good to hear thier thoughts on this.

We give our fawns probiotics at 24 hrs and again to treat soft stools. 2-3 days of giving it to them usually helps out. We are rookies, but like using them. Our adult feed has probiotics in them.

I have gave my fawns 2.5- 3 grams of powdered probiotics in there bottle every day from day 1. This is the first year that I have done this and this is also the first year that I have not lost a single fawn or have not had any problems with them. I also mix it in my feed so every deer that I own get's probotics every day.

I also was told by my doctor that if you feed more than they need you will not hurt anything, it will just pass through there system. My deer all started droping pellets in the first week and have every since. I used cap milk this year, 1/2 cup replacer per gallon and probotics every day. I would think that something elce caused the problem that he had with his fawns.

i used that probiotic called shock effect. i put it in once a day with the milk also. i had a problem with fawns early with e.coli so when i had to give them antibiotics i also gave them a little extra to help replace the good bugs that the antibiotics kill also. to tell you the truth i could see a big difference in the fawns this year. we didn't have any loose stools or death after we started using it. the buck fawns are very big. most have good buttons also. compared to last year everything looks better.

Dennis you cannot over feed the probiotics. I don't know what test or strain of bacteria were used but something is not right with those results. Since we started using micro-encapsulated probiotics we have not had a single sick deer. One time I accidentally left a 20lb bucket that was half full in a pen that had two bucks in it and they ate the whole thing. No problems. A whitetails stomach has trillions of CFU's (Colony Forming Units or bugs). There are lots of probiotic products on the market all of them beneficial and they are the future in nutrition.

Paul;

That is what I thought also, until I talked to this farmer and then when he said he had 3 autopsied at MSU. I was becoming doubtful,that was the reason for the post on here. I was going to and will continue to use probiotics. Thanks for the reply.
