Pulling your breeder bucks...when?

I know lots of you have recently said you wait until Jan 15th or February X to pull your bucks. For those of you who didn't AI...assuming the does went with the native herd and bred (midwest) around the 10th of November...even if they got missed, and cycled 21 days later, now we're talking the first of December. Anyone pulled their bucks yet? I might have gambled hard, but did so today due to my schedule and had some good weather to do it in.

On a slightly related topic, how does everyone manage getting their breeder bucks back together? I saw some fireworks today. I think everyone knows their place on the pecking order list now, but had some pretty tense moments. Even with sawed antlers, plenty are running dangerously close to the enclosure. With every buck I reintroduced, I put that buck and all the others into a new pen and had two or three pens adjacent that they could run from one to the other(s). I was hoping the dominant bucks would spend a lot of energy looking at the new pens and little on fighting. Fights didn't last too long, though. I just couldn't see putting those bucks in a separate pen of their own due to the potential stress of being isolated.

I AI d three does, all on Nov. 7th. Put back up buck in with them on Nov. 22. I have not seen any breeding take place and very little chasing. He checks where the does were standing (smells ground ). They have avoided him like the plague and he hasnt shown much interest in any particular doe that I ve seen. This is my first time to use a back up buck so I really dont know what to look for. I ve seen the chase in the wild many many times but have not seen anything remotley close to that type of chasing. I ve been in the pens everyday to feed water etc.. Please tell me what your thoughts are and when should I take the buck out of the pen with them. Thank you ! Jeff

I think you went about the buck situation the right by putting them in a new enclosure together, yes they fight but the do get curious to explore and that distracts them enough to limit the fighting somewhat, the fighting does slow down as time goes on in my expierence. I added 3 new bucks to my exsiting group of 4 bucks this september. I moved the 4 I had into a new pen the day before i picked up my 3 new ones. When I put the new ones in with the 4 bucks of mine they didnt even care that much because they had so much browse. Now it has been 3 months and they do scrap a little at the feeder once in a while but nothing serious, and these guys all have their racks. Good Luck with your bucks.
