I was wondering what is the best way of putting tags into 1 week old fawns ? I have the ear gun tagger this is my first time taging and was wondering how bad this hurts the fawns using it . Also i have 2 tame does that need new tags put in do you have to put them down to tag them ? Please advise on best ways of doing this . Thanks for all the help .

I hold the fawn on my lap, let it settle get everything in place and give it a good squeeze. Some will let out a yell and some dont but its all over in 3 seconds and they dont know what happen. Your tame does you maybe able to do if you do it quick depends on how close you can get to their ears and be quick with the gun

The little guys fuss a little like ekljr said above but it is over quickly..........I am not sure how you plan on doing your tags but we tag all buck fawns in their right ear and with odd numbers and all doe fawn in their left ear with even numbers......keeps it easier for identification purposes......as far as your tame doe I do not recomend trying to do them unless they are in a chute or put down........if you don't move quickly enough you take the chance of ripping their ear.........just an opinion......good luck!!

TOADMAN , I'm with dd on the tame does. That would most likely turn into a mess in a hurry. Dart or through a chute are your only options. Week old fawns could fight you some. One or two days old, they will normally just play dead. Every day that you wait makes it a little tougher on you and the fawns. Any fawn over three or four days old, I put between my legs and kind of sit on. Not really sit on, but more or less trap them so they can't move. Good luck.

our tamest do had a chewed tag that needed to be replaced so I grabbed the tagging gun and some side cutter pliers ( I like the sidecutters for removing tags ....just side them behind the button and squeeze..no danger fo getting anthing extra) she si dog tame and I removed the tag and put a new one into the same hole in the middle of a 10 acre pen.... I own no other deer I would even consider trying this with .... if you can wait on the mature does ...tag them in the fall I would not handle them just to replace a damaged tag

Dennis,

I've been tagging all my females in the right ear. Someone told me women were always right.

Thats funny Jerry cause thats what i always tell people when they ask why i put the doe tags in the right ear. Glad to here i'm not the only one that knows women are always right HA HA!!!

In all honesty I thought about that before i tagged my first fawn and I thought darn it..........I'm protesting that way of thinking...so i put it in the buck fawns right ear...because men are always right!!! LOL..........see women think they are always right and we let them believe that ....but we know in all honesty men are always right!!! Ok remeber before this blows up into a big fight we are just having fun here!!!!

Girls, its working. The guys are falling right in, and think they are always right. Just like we planned - empower them, make them think it is their idea, and we get what we want.:D:D:D Keep up the good work.;)

Dennis,Your right about the right ear for bucks,we can't give in to them girls and do things backwards. We have been doing bucks in the right ears for 22 years. I always feel the ear first and tag between the nerves.Very seldom we get a cry during tagging.

Robbie it's not only that we are always right.....we are much stronger, faster, loving, caring, honest and loyal just to name a few..........Hey and don't you women ever forget it took our rib to make you!!!:D;)

Deer Whisperer it's good to know I'm not the only guy that knows which ear the bucks should be tagged in!!!!!!!
