Show-Me Whitetails
Redline took his last breath on friday, he died of EHD. Two different times in the last 7 days, he went from death throws to standing on his feet.He fought like a champ. It has been my pleasure to have him on our farm. When I had to saw Redlines antlers This summer, they weighed 25.4 lbs. at 3 yrs on digital scales and there was still a month of growing left. This is Redlines first year to have yearlings grow out of him. It is obvious that he is passing on his ability to pour massive amounts of blood to the antlers. Redline was a special animal and he will be missed. There is some comfort in knowing he will live on through his offspring. Darren

Darren, I know Redline was very special to you and I am sorry for your loss. He was a great deer and I always looked forward to seeing new pictures of him during the growing season. Mike is right. EHD has been bad in WV also.

Darren,

I am sorry to hear about your losing Redline.......what a blessing you had just to be able to enjoy him on your farm! I know you will miss him but like you said he will live on through his offring.

Wow Darren I am sorry to hear of your loss. I will be looking forward to seeing your Redline offspring. Take care, Allen

I am proud of you Darren! You don't mind saying the dreaded EHD word on your farm. You know a lot go to great lengths to hide it from the general farmers. Myself, I feel it should be worth something to these good old boys to say if an animal has had it and what strain it was if possible. Passdown antibodies =$ in my book! I feel your pain as I lost some great bucks to it this year, Jason

I vaccinate every deer on the place twice a year, keep out oil rubs --so they have to get the smell of diesel on them everytime they get a drink of water, all of this does alot but doesnt stop it.. About 10 ago, I lost 2/3 of my herd to EHD. Since then I started fighting back and I lose 1 every 2 or 3 yrs from it. Redline is the only one on our place to get it this year( knock on wood) I go to great lengths to protect my animals, EHD just happens. It is in every state killing deer as we speak, both captive and wild. Livestock=deadstock, life=death. Believe me I hate losing him and having to cut his head off for testing after watching him fight so hard really sucked. We were putting about 6,000 cc of fluid in him every 24 hrs for 3 days. When I get his sawoffs mounted everyone will see firsthand what a special animal he really was, as they say, pictures dont do him justice. If you ever get a chance to watch our farm video, compare the size of his antlers to the size of his body, and he is a big bodied whitetail.I look forward to seeing everyones sons out of him. Thanks Darren

That is too bad, Sorry to here about your loss on a great buck. I've lost 9 out here in South Dakota over the last couple weeks and have been fogging day and night hoping it will help and do believe it does. We had light freeze and cool weather a week ago and it stopped but as soon as it warmed back up I lost 2 more. I've found over a dozen wild ones on my ranch which is 20 miles away from my enclosed herd. I find 1 or 2 wild ones every year but have had a year where I've found 40 wild ones dead from it, ya just never know. It's not if, it's how bad. Good luck with everyones deer and hopefully it will cool down and freeze those stinkin midges out.

so sorry to hear this bad news, hopefully you have another one moving up from the minors to fill his very large shoes.....

What a deadly unseen killer EHD is. It makes you feel helpless in your fight to defeat it, when it strikes your farm. And sadly it so often takes the great ones. Good Luck & Good Health as you move forward. Wayne Green & Russ Bellar

Darren, I am sorry to hear about Redline also. I have had EHD on my farm this year also.

It is a terrible thing and can kill even the healthiest deer. I feel your pain also, but we will move on to next year.

Darren,

Sorry to hear about Redline. I know he was probably your favorite. You have been growing great bucks each year, and I know with your genetics, this year's yearlings were good ones! Hang in there!

Hey there Darren, even though we have not met I feel your lose . It seems as though it was just a few months ago you were on the forums searching for a name for your farm . Oh what a long way you have come in a short time . You have been producing some great animals in that time . Congrats to you and your family !! I think after my first year I figured out that raising whitetail i`m going to have to except death . Not at all !!!! You just find your own way to deal with it .You build a bond with these great animals and losing one is always hurtful weather it`s a fawn or a 300 inch buck . Again Darren I`m sorry for your lose .

ANYONE who says their deer are immune to EHD is wrong. Lots of deer die and the real cause of death is never known. Most deer will live thier whole life and never get it, but if they do, its not pretty. I have had deer live through it but not often. It isnt a secret-it can happen. Just another risk we take for the opportunity to raise these animals.

Darren, sorry to her about Redline, I know you will miss him.

I have three Redline offspring two does and one buck. cant wait to see what they produce.
