Vet gave her a Thiamine shot in her vane. She has had 5 shots of thiamine sence. Mon morning ZuZu is weak, she had small amount of water orally, but will not eat. Please respond quickly.

Thank you ,

Administering fluids either sub-q or IV would probably help keep her from becoming dehydrated.

Jeff & Nancy I`m not sure but you may be looking at listeria or call listeriosis. Circling disease. If it is you want to treat with Tetradure and Banamine. Check Scott`s list here and see what others have treated it with. If she goes down with a ridgid neck make sure you keep her hydrated because she won`t have much body control. I`m not there to observe her. Meds and close care will be what will save her if it is Listeria. I pulled one through it a few months back for a friend and one day it took around the clock care of giving water. She could swallow but no strength enough to get up and drink. Good luck.

We have her on meds and are giving her water. She doesn't appear to be dehydrated, but she is weak. We have been able to get her to swallow, not as good as she did early yesterday, though. We were wondering what we can do to get her energy and strength back. Mitch, you mentioned you took care of a deer that had no strenght to get up and drink. What finally gave her the strength? Thanks for any and all feedback.

Polio (at least the most common form called goat polio) makes the deer do something called "star-gazing". This symptom is a throwing back of the head and the appearance of looking into the sky (hence the term). Listeriosis can best be diagnosed by noticing a twitching of the eyes in rapid motion. I hope this helps.

Jeff, if this is listeria it takes approx. 3 to 4 days before she was able to stand and was very unstable for days after. It took weeks for her to finally start to show improvement. She had fawns in her that she aborted to save herself. Substantial weight loss. The meds was a regiment of Tetradure and Banamine for 5 days. 1 day SQ the next IM. That was the Tet. The banamine was IM daily. She was given water from a 60 cc syringe every hour the day she was the worst. It seemed like she really wanted water but was unable to drink on her own without aid. With the ridgid neck came a lot of body convulsing. Good luck. Hope this isn`t what your dealing with.

We had that a few years ago with a buck. We mixed eggs, terrmycin, whle milk, survival D, and maple syrup in a blender. Then we have to use a turkey baster to feed him. We fed him from Sunday to Thursday until he finally laid down and started eating grain. We gave him 20 cc of Penicillin 2x a day. Sounds like a lot, but it worked.

Nancy and I would like to thank everyone for their help trying to save ZuZu. It is with a heavy heart to let everyone know that we lost her. The vet is doing extensive testing to try to determine what she had. We will post the results as soon as we know anything.

Thank you,

Jeff and Nancy
