I'm just curious on how many 1/2 cc straws you can get out of one buck from one draw. I know it can very from buck to buck but just curious on the average amount.

My 12 year old daughter collected a buck late fall and received 440 straws. Every collection may vary.

We drew our buck Vinny and had his straws packed 60 million per straw. If we had packed with less per straw we could have gotten a lot more straws, but wanted to go with a lot higher quality, rather than quantity of straws.

A lot of other variables also come into play, for example: age of buck, time of year, health of buck, ect.

I would say plan for about 50 straws knowing you could get zero and kill the buck or you could get a great amount of say 125-150 straws.

couldn't say it any better Roger!

i'm sure there has been many a good buck needlessly die because of the procedure.

In my opinion.... :) ............No more Bucks have "Needlessly" died Drawing semen..............Than Does being Lap A/I'd ?

ALOT of Deer .........................Die EVERY DAY and were never having either done!

The point of my comment was that there are many variables involved and there is no way to predict the true outcome. You could collect and get zero straws and have a dead buck, or you could have a successful process and get lots of straws.

All on the same day I collected a mature four year old buck and only ended up with 1cc of good quality semen, I then collected a yearling and only got 4/10cc of extremely high quality semen, then I collected a three year old that was a veritable geyser. We collected 4.5cc of high quality semen, this was the volume prior to extending. None of these bucks suffered ill effects due to being collected, and all produced. But as you can see its hard to average as there are so many variables. Below are the approximate totals of 1/2 cc straws that were packed with the volume and quality of semen. I am going by memory as I do not work at the farm where these animals were drawn any more. I do however have a thing for numbers and memory like and elephant if that counts for anything ;) They were all packed by Champion Genetics in Texas where they were analysed for quality and consistency. They were all packed 45-55mil per straw.

4 year old - 27 straws

Yearling - 38 straws

3 year old - 165 straws

And the point of my post Rodger................Was that there are variables ANYTIME we handle deer......vaccination,semen draw,a/i,moving from pen to pen or across the country!

And that ANYTIME we do something with deer the owner must evaluate the risk to his or her animal and understand what is POSSIBLY at stake and make a decision from that.
